Transphobia, Afghan refugees, consumer rights, and more!

Contact all members of Congress:

Contact White House or other federal agencies:

  • FIGHT BACK AGAINST CPAC TRANSPHOBIA AGENDA
As if Trump’s rants at the CPAC weren’t bad enough, anti-transgender rhetoric was pervasive and scary to those of us who are trans and/or have trans loved ones. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2023/mar/07/cpac-anti-trans-rhetoric. Capped by Daily Wire pundit Michael Knowles, who called for “the eradication of transgenderism from public life entirely,” which basically means getting rid of trans people, Republicans’ toxic rhetoric is exacerbating the already high suicide rate of LGBTQ youth. Let’s tell our personal stories that affirm the trans people in our lives and ask our MoCs to issue a statement condemning Knowles’s remarks and supporting trans youth.
  • SAVE NEW COLLEGE FROM RON DESANTIS
Ron DeSantis has targeted the New College of Florida in his effort to progress-proof higher education, and students and alumni are fighting back, including a protest during last week’s board of trustees meeting. They’ve formed a coalition to defend educational freedom called Save New College. Let’s join their team so we can stay engaged with how to support their work.

  • SUPPORT THE AFGHAN ADJUSTMENT ACT
There are nearly 80,000 refugees from Afghanistan who were given temporary legal status in the U.S. when the Taliban took over in 2021. Now this status is about to expire. Last year, despite bipartisan support, and favorable ratings from the majority of Americans, including veterans groups, last year’s Congress failed to pass the Afghan Adjustment Act, which would have grant these refugees a legal pathway to remain in the U.S. Let’s tell our MoCs to reintroduce and pass legislation as soon as possible that would guarantee the right of these Afghans to remain in the U.S.

  • HELP ELECT MORE DEMOCRATIC WOMEN
Emerge is changing the face of politics to create an inclusive democracy. We are the nation’s premier organization that recruits, trains, and provides a powerful network to Democratic women who want to run for office.” With their training growing into several states, progress is being made, like in Maryland.  We can donate and/or enroll in their very successful training program and support system here.

  • LEARN TO ADVOCATE AND THEN LOBBY FOR CONSUMER RIGHTS
The rights we are learning about during National Consumer Protection Week are under attack. Consumer protections are in danger, with agencies such as the popular Consumer Financial Protection Bureau facing attacks from the Supreme Court and GOP members of Congress.  This April we have a chance to fight back and the Consumer Federation of America is ready to help. They’re teaming up with consumer groups around the country to meet with our legislators for Consumer Awareness Week, April 17-22, to bring attention to the important needs of today’s consumers. They will train us and assist us with scheduling virtual meetings with our Congressmembers and their staff. We can sign up here to attend an online training session on April 12th at 2 p.m.ET and learn about key consumer protection issues focused on supporting two critically important consumer protection agencies: the CFPB and the FTC, and how to lobby.
