The fairness of our elections are significantly impacted when partisan state legislatures draw congressional district maps. Gerrymandering, as it’s called, happens at both the state and national level, and allows political parties to pick their voters and indefinitely hold on to power.
At least a dozen states could gerrymander district maps in their favor before the 2024 election, further eroding the fairness of our elections.
In 2022, Pennsylvania General Assembly elections were held under a commission-drawn map, undoing decades of gerrymandering. We can do this nationwide!
Gerrymandering undermines a representative democracy. A party could win the majority of votes, but not a majority of seats due to the way district maps are drawn.
Gerrymandering can also occur at the local level.
Just last month, the partisan Central Bucks School Board submitted a redrawn map that would give right-wing members a lock on the school board majority for years to come.
Election outcomes should not result in a loud minority overruling the majority. Politicians shouldn’t be able to pick their voters. Voters should pick their elected representatives.
Our democracy is predicated on fair elections. Sign on to demand that Congress ban gerrymandering!
