Dark money buys political influence

The Citizens United decision laid the groundwork for the creation of Super PACs, or independent political groups that can take in and spend unlimited sums. These groups, paired with newly unrestrained corporations and unions, have contributed to astronomical growth in independent political spending. – Brennan Center

We are moving in the wrong direction, away from transparency toward a system dominated by “dark money” — political spending whose ultimate source is shrouded in secrecy because it comes from groups not required to disclose their donors. Less than a decade ago, transparency in political spending was the norm for federal elections. Then, in a series of decisions culminating in Citizens United, the courts vastly expanded which groups could run independent political ads. Federal disclosure laws remained virtually unchanged, however, opening up a variety of easy-to-exploit loopholes.

As a result, dark money groups who do not disclose their donors have proliferated. Many of these organizations have names like “Freedom Partners” and “Americans Elect,” which reveal almost nothing about themselves or their real agendas. – Brennan Center

Foreign money

Follow the money to solve political mysteries. Use this map to see how Russian oligarchs funneled money to shady front organizations involved with Ponzi schemes. These same oligarchs had helped Trump’s campaign so they know what they’re doing. How George Santos donated money to Republican candidates and committees. Now Santos is a congressman and Kevin McCarthy is speaker of the Congress which is questioning aid to Ukraine. Where’s the caviar comrade?

Follow the dark money that decides who gets elected. Campaign disclosure laws have to be fixed to protect democracy.
