BADASS Briefing

9 mins read

I’m here in Richmond watching the Virginia Grassroots bills move through the legislature.  You can easily keep an eye on them here. You can also see the work that still needs to be done here in the constantly updated Virgina Grassroots Calls to Action (CTAs).  The newest CTAs will always be at the top of the list. It only took me 10 minutes to go through the entire list.

Remember, we need to get louder! Please take action with us NOW and throughout the legislative session.

Let’s keep up our energies by joining in community for some of the many gatherings below. Join us for some Candidate Courage Rising on Friday’s Power Lunch. If you want to show your support by donating, considers helping the Virginia Young Democrats raise money to be able to attend the national Young Democrats convention in Las Vegas in June.

ALL IN,

Virginia Grassroots Calls to Action

Get loud, take 10 and let your legislators hear from you!

The January 27, 2023 Friday Power Lunch, Courage Rising will spotlight courageous women who have stepped up in the face of unimaginable challenges. From MAGA Republican intimidation tactics, including death threats, to political and emotional consequences of running with little or no outside help, we are featuring stories of courage rising. REGISTER

We will begin our show on courageous women with Jessica Piper, mother to five and grandmother to three who ran for office in 2022 in a farming community on the Missouri/Iowa border. The MAGA Republicans in her district tried everything to scare her off, but she stood her ground. Jess used her voice on TikTok (@jesspipermo) to let the world know what it was like running in her rural, red district. She didn’t win her race, but she became a social media influencer for rural voices. Today she is the Executive Director of Blue Missouri and hosts the weekly podcast, Dirt Road Democrat.

We will then talk to two bold, brave, and badass Virginia women running for office:

Jessica Anderson, former candidate in CD1 and now running in the new HD 71, found her voice on TikTok and has become a social media influencer (@crazymotherrunner) in the TikTok Mom Community. Jessica will share her journey running in a red district and how social media helped her find community and the confidence to put her voice out there.

Alexsis Rogers, Chair of CD4 and Organizing Director at the National Domestic Workers Alliance & Care in Action, is running in the special election for Virginia Senate 9 to build on Jennifer McClellan’s legacy of service to central Virginia. As a queer, black woman living and running for office in the capital of the confederacy, Alexsis knows a thing or two about courage. We will hear how her organizing skills help her meet the moment.

For our final segment we will talk to Every District‘s Nicole Hobbs, co-founder and Executive Director. Every District is a grassroots organization that provides state legislative candidates with early data and fundraising support. They have been helping Virginia candidates since 2017.

Join us on Friday when we’ll hear women with conviction and a whole lot of chutzpah talk about how they overcome obstacles and persevere to make change.   REGISTER
