Golden State Warriors Visit Biden White House. – HuffPo
Steve Kerr, Head Coach of the Warriors said he participated in a roundtable on gun violence with White House officials and two of his players, Moses Moody and Klay Thompson.“We learned a lot about what this administration is doing to help create a safer environment in our country,” Kerr said. Biden signed gun legislation last year, but he’s pledged to keep working toward tighter restrictions, including an assault weapons ban.
How do you take a public event and use the media attention it generates to inspire people to act on an important issue? How do make it simple for them to see who is holding up reform? Who is paying them to block gun safety legislation? And how viewers can find and call their rep to demand they stop playing politics with people’s lives for the sake of political donations?
This blog explains how a rapid response video and GIF were created along with an interactive map to let viewers can find and call their rep in two clicks. The project was inspired by Richard Greene, a political strategist and completed in four hours using mostly free software. The technique can be used to inspire people who don’t regularly vote but feel strongly about an issue to register and vote to bring about change.

Take action on gun violence
Thirty-six years ago, Golden State Warriors Coach Steve Kerr’s life was shattered when his father was shot and killed.
“I can’t emphasize this enough: If we’re going to move forward with Brady’s plan for gun safety reform, we need to join forces to overcome Mitch McConnell and the NRA’s dangerous inaction. Together we’re unstoppable, and I hope you’ll join me in this fight to take action on gun violence”, said Coach Steve Kerr. – Brady United
How this rapid response campaign was designed
A map was created with ArcGIS Online which shows the Republicans who voted against the gun weapon ban, their districts, donors and their phone number. Clicking on the phone number directly calls the congressional feature. This works from both phones, tablets and laptops.
A short 25 second video was created with the free iMovie app which consists of images of recent mass shootings. The video ends with a call to action to find and call your rep. The video was uploaded to YouTube.
This video was converted to a GIF which was embedded in the map. The link to the map was converted into a short URL bit.ly/warriorforgunsafety and a QR Code using bit.ly in order to make it easier to share on social media.

The map includes links to the video and groups where viewers can learn more about the issue and how to register to vote.

Time is of the essence
Speed is of the essence to take advantage of what is in the headlines and people are paying attention to. That’s why this rapid response video was released within 12 hours of the White House visit.
People are interested about issues as it relates to them. That’s why a map is helpful in letting viewers find their elected official responsible for the problem. This map provides the phone number for the Congressional rep, Senator, Governor and State Attorney General.
This map lets a viewer watch the 25 second Steve Kerr video about the demand to ban assault weapons, find their rep and place a call within one minute. They also have a link to where to register to vote.
TakeAway: Use rapid response campaigns to leverage what is in the headlines to inspire people to mobilize and vote.
