IC-SS Special Update: Jan. 5, 2023

 The Indivisible Chicago-South Side newsletter is on winter break, to return Monday, Jan. 9th. But we’re sending this special update on upcoming candidate forums.

Candidate Forums for City Elections

Chicago’s municipal Election Day is February 28, but early voting begins in late January. While IC-SS won’t be making endorsements, we’ll help you get the info you need to cast your ballot. Check out these events.


1.  City Council – 4th, 5th Ward Forums

In the 4th and 5th wards, both alders (Sophia King and Leslie Hairston) are stepping down. Who’ll be the new alders? Come to these forums to hear the candidates!

5th Ward – Aldermanic Forum, Sun. Jan 8th

The League of Women Voters of Chicago will present a 5th Ward candidates forum in person at Montgomery Place in Hyde Park (5550 South Shore Dr.) on Sunday, January 8th, from 3:00-5:00 pm. Registration isn’t required.

See the Facebook Event page  for information about this forum. All 12 candidates vying for the 5th ward seat have accepted the invitation to speak. (Scroll to full list of 5th ward candidates here.)

The event will be livestreamed at the League of Women Voters of Chicago’s Facebook home page.

The League of Women Voters of Chicago holds this forum in memory of Dorothy Scheff.

4th Ward – Aldermanic Forum, Thurs., Feb. 9th

On Thursday, Feb. 9th, 6:00-8:30 pm, attend the 4th Ward Aldermanic Forum in person at Grace Place in the South Loop (637 S. Dearborn). Register here.

The event will also be livestreamed on Facebook. All 7 candidates have agreed to speak. (Scroll to full list of 4th ward candidates here.)

Forum organizers include Grace Episcopal Church, Indivisible Downtown Chicago, League of Women Voters, and South Loop Neighbors.

Tickets are free, but you must RSVP at this registration page.


2.  Women’s Mayoral Forum – January 14

In the mayoral race, 11 candidates are currently running. Want to learn more about them? On Saturday, January 14th, 2:00-4:00 pm, attend the 2023 Women’s Mayoral Forum at Chicago Temple (77 W. Washington).

The event is organized by Chicago Women Take Action, with support from the Indivisible Chicago Alliance and other groups.Moderators will be Cheryl Corley & Carol Marin. Tickets are required. Go here for free tickets.

3. Police Dist. Councils – Info Session, Jan. 31

Mark your calendars! On Tuesday, January 31st, 7:00-9:00 pm, Indivisible Chicago-South Side will hold an online info session onthe Empowering Communities for Public Safety (ECPS) ordinance, including an explanation of the role of the newly established police District Councils.

The info session will open with a teach-in on ECPS by Frank Chapman of CAARPR. After that, we’ll hear brief presentations from candidates running for the District Council in the 2nd police district.

To date, all four candidates have been invited and the following candidates have already confirmed they will attend: Coston Plummer. Ephraim Lee, Julia Kline.
