Coming together to work and to play

TIME FOR PARTY BUSINESS

7 pm, Monday December 12

It’s time for a new Executive Board!

Members of the new County Committee will meet virtually on Monday to cast their votes for a new Executive Board. WCDP members met on Nov. 28 to elect the Committee, composed of members representing 15 geographic areas throughout the County plus the County’s Democratic elected officials (and nominees.) That committee will now in turn designate our next Executive Board. All members are welcome to attend, though only the new Committee members will vote.

According to the bylaws, candidates must present themselves as a slate. Technically, it can be a slate of one, but in practice, interested people do run as a team. As Chair Chris Savage is stepping down, Theresa Reid, the current Co-Vice Chair of Precinct Organizing, has composed a slate with a mix of seasoned members of current and past Boards, and new leaders who have indicated their willingness to step up. If anyone wishes to submit a different slate, they can send them to Chris Savage ahead of the meeting.

For more information or to request a link to attend (for those not on the County Committee) write to Chris at chair@washtenawdems.org.

We’re all looking forward to inaugurating a new team, to build on the great work we all did together this last cycle!

SHARE THE WARMTH— SEASONAL COAT DRIVE

Let’s show that Dems Care, by helping to gather badly-needed winter clothing for our vulnerable families. Washtenaw Dems are collaborating with Jewish Family Services, the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office and the Jewish Community Center to ensure that our Head Start children and the refugee families we are welcoming are warm this winter.

We’re asking for coats, hats, gloves, and boots, new or very gently used and clean, for WISD Early Intervention, Head Start and the Refugee Families (their need is particularly great) served by WISD and JFS Refugee Resettlement. See more details — including dropoff locations and times —  here. Drop off at the WCDP office Saturday 12/10 and 12/17 from 12-3!

Donations can also be made online at jfsannarbor, org.

TIME FOR A PARTY PARTY!

7-9:30 pm, Monday Dec. 19

All volunteers and supporters are cordially invited to join us on Monday the 19th, to celebrate all we have been able to do together, and enjoy some holiday spirit!

Join the fun on Monday, December 19, 7:00 – 9:30 pm at 734 Brewing Company, 15 E Cross St. Our good friend, owner Brian Jones-Chance, has on hand great craft beer, wine, and bourbon. On Monday night, parking (including wheelchair accessible spots) will be easy — in front of 734, in the Frog Island lot that backs up to the 734 fence (see map), and on the street.

We’ll have a White Elephant gift exchange (participation voluntary, of course). To play, bring a wrapped gift that you think would charm, amuse, or inspire a fellow WCDP volunteer. This can be something from your own home that you no longer need but have had trouble parting with, or something new you buy for under $20. Everyone who brings a gift will get a ticket to play. The game will start at about 8:00 pm. Drinking, carousing, and swapping of stories from the campaign trail will proceed throughout. Bring your most impressive holiday cookies if you want to share!

Please RSVP here so we can get at least a rough head count. We hope we’ll see you there for a well-deserved celebration!

SAVE THE DATE—JANUARY MEMBERSHIP MEETING

9:30 am – 12:00 pm, Saturday Jan 7

The monthly meeting in January will focus on unions. Ian Robinson of the Huron Vallley Labor Federation will speak, followed by a panel with leaders of four local unions. The general question will be: what do unions expect/need from state and national governments and from the Democratic Party, with a special emphasis, of course, on Washtenaw County. We hope to see you there!
