Countdown!

Hello, everyone!

Countdown…Today (Wednesday)  is the last day of this session of the CA legislature!

Before we start with the legislation and events – We’ve been amassing a great collection of memes, quotes and cartoons generated by the GOP’s tantrum over the minuscule loan forgiveness that finally got passed. We like this one!

Note: Some of you may have noticed that this newletter is at least a week late…Organized missives from us go WAY down before, during and after the Swap Meet Justice event. Our bandwidth is stretched to the limit while we attempt to corral this amazing moving feast of community social justice activities, which take place on the last Sunday of every month at Oxnard College.
Update on the August 28th fair coming soon, but here’s an overview of the event from the order list for the tent supplier. For comparison’s sake, this whole thing started with just two tents doing citizenship, DACA, green cards and voter registration. See the latest listing of services for the community at swapmeetjustice.org.
However, our newsletter-neglect doesn’t mean that other events aren’t happening or that we’re not updating our calendar feed – tinyurl.com/VC-calendar.  We are, we just don’t have time to tell you about them.

Actions!

OK, back to our regularly scheduled program…

Tick, tick, tick, CA state bills near their deadline… Game over on Aug. 31.

We’ve been scouring for bills with our state-centric associates before the hammer comes down on Wednesday – looking for the ones which may just have been overlooked, and the ones that make legislators squirmand procrastinate. The VISION Act, AB-937, which protects immigrants from ICE, is still waiting in the Senate. SB-1137, which creates sane(r) setbacks for oil wells from humans, is stuck in the Assembly. Calling both your assemblymember and state senator will take less than 5 minutes. (This action will be edited as bills fall are decisively passed or killed.)

Pride Weekend actions! Add your voice!

If you missed Diversity Collective’s amazing event in downtown Ventura – we can’t re-create that for you. But we can give you the same actions we handed out there, and ask that you add your voice, and the voices of your friends and relatives, to protect the rights and lives of our LGBTQIA+ community.
– STATE ACTION #1: Tell your assemblymembers to pass SB-107 – Gender-Affirming Health Care to provide refuge for trans kids & their families from states that are criminalizing them & threatening to remove transgender children from their homes.
– STATE ACTION #2: Thank Governor Newsom for his advocacy and make an ask!:
– FEDERAL ACTION : Call your senators and make sure your friends and family call theirs to pass the Equality Act! https://indivisibleventura.org/2022/08/22/pride-weekend-actions-add-your-voice/

“Schedule F” stands for “Fascism,” “Flunkey” and “Fraud.

There are good reasons the GOP doesn’t want to teach accurate American history and it’s not all about our brutal treatment of minority groups. There is also a history of experiments in governance that ended in cesspools of incompetence and corruption, such as the “spoils” system, which Trump resurrected near the end of his term with his executive order “Schedule F.” He was hoping, when re-elected, that he could wreak vengeance on the civil servants who thwarted him and reward his favorite syncophants. Maybe even profit under the table. Though that didn’t come to pass, the bones of the order are waiting to be resurrected – by Trump, the GOP, or the next tyrant America elects. Call your legislators to pass the “Preventing a Patronage System Act” now. A competent civil service shouldn’t be held hostage to the whims any president. https://indivisibleventura.org/2022/08/18/schedule-f-stands-for-fascism-flunkey-and-fraud/

SWAP MEET JUSTICE FAIR returns to Oxnard College’s Marketplace on Sept. 26 from 9:00 am – 3:00!

OPPORTUNITIES!

Make a film! Change some minds!

“OUR MISSION: Crowdsource video content with impactful, pro-democracy messaging — and ultimately, inspire our audience to vote for Democratic candidates in the upcoming midterm elections.
OUR BELIEF: Original videos, from a variety of voices and in a variety of styles, can arm Democrats and Independents with effective talking points against the barrage of right-wing propaganda and MAGA lies we all encounter daily. These messages will be best received (and internalized) by undecided, resigned and doubtful voters if they are “bite-sized,” powerful, heartfelt, and entertaining!
HOW IT WORKS: From August 16 through September 6, we’re inviting entries for short videos (3 minutes or less) in response to common arguments against voting Democratic. We welcome all genres and levels of expertise!”

Get paid for phone banking!
Groundworks Campaigns is HIRING PHONEBANKERS! Please spread the word about a great phonebank job Sept 6-Nov 8 for some great progressive candidates in the East Bay. $25/hr, shifts Sun-Thurs, 3:30-8:30.  Flier below.  Must have laptop and good bandwidth as this is a remote position. Folks can PM me with questions too, application info on the flier. Let’s win!

Note: the “daily driving stipend” is only for those living in the Bay area. Everyone else would be working remotely. Those with bilingual skills especially needed!

Smack right-wing extremist Mike Garcia with a digital billboard!
GOP candidates are busy trying to walk back their immensely unpopular forced-birther and anti-LGBTQ agenda. Unfortunately for nearby Rep. Mike Garcia (CA-27), he has a lot “on-the-record.”

  • He signed an amicus brief asking the Supreme Court to overturn Roe and Casey.
  • He’s also co-sponsor of the Life at Conception Act, the incredibly dangerous federal personhood bill that would ban all abortions and certain types of birth control such as IUDs. This type of bill will imprison women, especially those who have fewer options for reaching medical assistance.
  • He voted against the Women’s Health Protection Act – which would codify Roe v. Wade.
  • Garcia voted against the federal Equality Act to protect all Americans from discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

(Shared from Jessica Craven) “Super activist Michelle Manire Fowle is singlehandedly trying to raise $5000 to get a billboard up in CA-27 telling voters what a horrible person they have representing them in Congress. Garcia flipped this seat red in 2020 (it used to be Katie Hill’s 😰) by just over 300 votes, and since then the district lines have been redrawn to be more favorable to us. WE CAN DEFINITELY TAKE IT BACK!

Michelle is halfway to her first goal of $5,000, and needs $2,005 more to secure the first digital billboard which will be on the 14 freeway in the Antelope Valley. Can anyone help her get there? I gave $25. I believe in this cause.

The road to holding the House runs straight through CA, y’all. Just saying.”

(From Indivisible National) “Last week, President Biden announced federal student debt relief of up to $20,000 for Pell Grant recipients and up to $10,000 for anyone else with student debt making less than $125,000 per year.
This is an incredible achievement.
Up to 43 million borrowers will see relief under these terms. That means someone you know, someone you love, is poised to see some amount of relief from this incredible policy at a time when every household is feeling the squeeze of rising costs on household budgets.
Share this information widely. Let’s make sure our children, our spouses, and our families know that debt relief is on the way. If people don’t know about this, they can’t take advantage of the benefits. Let’s make sure to take care of our communities.”

We need your help talking to voters about Democrats up and down the ticket. A phone bank is a great way to reach voters and talk about issues we all care about. With the importance placed on the Midterm elections, we need to reach out and talk to voters about crucial swing district and state races up and down the ballot so that we maintain control of the House, expand Democratic control of the Senate, and flip state legislatures to preserve democracy. Virtual phone banks have become an essential part of campaigns. Whether you’re new to phonebanking or an expert, you have a place with our people-powered campaigns. The good news is, phone banking is easy to learn and can be done from the comfort of your own home.

On Wednesdays, we are calling Mission 4 Arizona to support Senator Kelly, Katie Hobbs for Governor, Adrian Fontes for Secretary of State The Nevada Senatorial race is considered one of the closest races in the United States. Help protect Senator Catherine Cortez Masto’s seat. Volunteers like you can help Mission for Arizona unite Democrats across Arizona and build upon our historic success in 2020 to re-elect Mark Kelly and Democrats up and down the ticket. And we are offering phonebanks into the California Central Valley on behalf of Rudy Salas who is running for Congress in CD 22.

RSVP today and invite a friend to join us!

Bring your laptop or tablet. If you have never phonebanked before, we will train you.

Mobilize link: https://www.mobilize.us/mobilize/event/476902/Thursday – 09/01/2022 – ONLINE PHONE BANK – “Grow the Democratic Majority, Phonebank, Sun. @2PM & Thurs @4PM PDT thru September, 2022” (4:00 pm – 6:15 pm PT)

The Arizona Primary comes up August 2. In July, we’ll be focusing on getting voters out for Mark Kelly and down ballot Dems and educate Arizonians to the fact that the Dems can take the Arizona House and Senate by electing just two more officials to each of the chambers. Firmly turning Arizona Blue goes a long way to saving our democracy. After August 2, we’ll focus on battleground states where there are U.S. Senate, House and Governorship elections in November, and get out the vote to keep the House and Senate, increase our majorities there, and capture governorships for the Democrats.
We will continue with Sunday phonebanks, 2PM Pacific time, on zoom and add bi-weekly Thursday afternoon phonebanks (4 to 6PM) to use the DNC dialer (the best dialer yet!) in an effort to further the goals of recruiting volunteers, supporting candidates and identifying the voters we need in November. Join us on Zoom. The day before the phonebank, we will send you the zoom link. Look for it in your email. Join our community of phone bankers and let’s save Democracy.

Thursday – 09/01/2022 – ONLINE PHONE BANK – ” #NativeVote22 Weekly Virtual Phone Bank” (4:00 pm – 6:30 pm PT)

oin us Thursdays and Saturdays (with the Bay Area Coalition) for our virtual phone bank to reach out to Navajo, Hopi, and Apache voters to unleash the power of Native votes on November 8th and beyond.

We’ll begin each week in our Zoom meeting, review the week’s script, and then make calls for two hours. You can stay on the Zoom if you’d like help (or company), or you can hop off to make calls on your own.

Why are these calls so important? Northeast Arizona tribal voters can defend Mark Kelly’s Senate seat (and our National Senate majority), and flip statewide offices – including the Governor – this fall! Help us make sure Native Democrats have all the information they need to register for mail-in voting (AEVL), triple their votes, and support Democrats up and down the ballot this fall. The work you do now to empower Native voters will last beyond the next election, and build political power for Native communities.

JOIN THE POSTCARD BRIGADE!!
You Can Make a Difference! Do you want to help Democrats win in the 2022 elections?  You can write Get Out The Vote (GOTV) postcards to help get Democratic voters to the polls!  Studies have shown that receiving a colorful postcard with a short punchy message is the most effective way to persuade a voter to get to the polls.

One of Indivisible Ventura’s members is working with Postcards to Swing States (PSS) to coordinate GOTV postcarding focused on Senate races in swing states.  PSS identifies the campaigns, writes the message, and provides the voter names and addresses. She will provide the cards and, if needed, the stamps.

If you want to participate, please send an email to her at ivpostcards@gmail.com. She will add you to her writer roster and email you a description of the campaigns she is currently running. You decide which campaigns you want to join and specify the number of cards you want.  If you live locally, you may collect your supplies from her address in Ventura.  She can also will snail mail your packet to you

Resist every damn day! – Debby Millais, Postcard Wrangler

Please DONATE to the cause!
Indivisible Ventura is completely volunteer run and your donation will support the direct costs of organizing in Ventura — things like expenses for Swap Meet Justice, posters, art supplies, stamps, transportation, and more! Although we’ve defeated Trump and taken back the Senate, we have to act urgently to save our democracy and enact other desperately needed reforms. Getting it done depends on all of us. Let’s stand together, indivisible. Indivisible Ventura is one of 6,000 grassroots Indivisible groups across the country. Together, we will win. (https://secure.actblue.com/donate/ven383907253)
