IC-SS News 08-01-22: How will you make a difference?

Text with the Texting Team: Aug 2 & 8

You say you like texting voters? Now’s your chance! Tomorrow and next week (Tuesday, Aug 2 + Monday, Aug 8), get out the Wisconsin vote from the comfort of your own home.

The Wisconsin Primary is August 9th, and candidate Mandela Barnes is the Democratic frontrunner seeking to oust the far right-wing MAGA incumbent, GOP Senator Ron Johnson. Early and absentee voting is already underway, and we want to increase support and enthusiasm among Democratic voters in advance of both the primary and the general election.

The Texting Team of Indivisible Chicago writes: We will be texting in support of the national Indivisible-endorsed candidate and frontrunner in this race – current Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes.

Mandela Barnes is a historic candidate running in a historic moment. Poised to become the youngest ever and first Black Senator from Wisconsin, and having grown up in one of the poorest zip codes in the state, Lt Gov Barnes is the kind of transformative leader Wisconsin and the country needs in Washington. Getting Mandela Barnes to the Senate would bring us that much closer to winning structural changes that create a future working families deserve. Read more about Mandela Barnes and why national Indivisible endorsed him here.

Join the Indivisible Chicago Texting Team, Indivisible Wisconsin, and the national IndivisiText team for TWO Wisconsin Primary texting parties on Zoom on August 2 and August 8 – sign up here:

NOTE: After signing up, follow the instructions in your confirmation email and also sign up for Indivisible’s Zoom and for your TextOut account, if you don’t have one already. At the parties, we’ll offer TextOut training to those who are new to this tool or want a refresher. We’ll also have a game or two (texting bingo, yay!) and be on the Zoom with you the whole time to provide support and camaraderie.

Let’s Keep It Going: Write to Voters!

MAKE A DIFFERENCE. Handwritten letters encourage people to get out and vote. And in many districts, a few votes can sway an election. Vote Forward is a leader in letter-writing campaigns.

Want evidence? Read about the impact of Vote Forward letter campaigns here & here. Then join our Vote Forward mentor Steve Kaganand IC-SS members (like Joyce Mannis, pictured above) to pen your own letters – while enjoying time together outdoors at the Nile in Hyde Park.

Come to Vote Forward Gatherings: Thursdays, Aug 4 & 18

This week… and later this month, join us for letter-writing gatherings at the Nile outdoor patio on these THURSDAYS: August 4th + August 18th, 6:30-9:00 pmRegister here!

At last week’s Vote Forward gathering, we wrote 120 letters to be mailed to voters in Michigan, Texas, Illinois, Virginia, and Nevada – key states & districts. These letters will be mailed out – along with many thousands across the country – in time to make a real difference in voter turnout.

Register here. Then meet us – and our Vote Forward mentor, Steve Kagan – at 6:30 this Thursday, August 4th and Thursday, August 18th, at the outdoor patio of the Nile, 1162 E 55th St. IC-SS will spring for appetizers and bring wine.

Feel free to bring wine/beer and to purchase your own food or soft drinks to support the Nile. If you wish, you can donate first-class stamps and bring along pens, highlighters, and stickers to personalize the letters you complete.

If you’re already signed up with Vote Forward, you are welcome to print out and bring your own letters. But you can register and attend without bringing a thing. Register here. See you this week on Thursday August 4th (and again on Thursday August 18th)!

People, Power, Progress: Let’s Act Together

Make a difference in Illinois, Michigan, and the pivotal state of Wisconsin. One way to get active is via the citywide Indivisible Chicago Alliance (ICA).

IC-SS Co-Leader Sarah Lincoln with Bill Mengebier & some of the Indivisible Chicago team who knocked 100s of doors in SW Michigan, talking to voters about issues they care about in this key battleground state.
Explore ICA’s opportunities below and pick one to try:

Sat. Aug 20th: Canvass with the Congresswomen!

From Indivisible Chicago Alliance: Here’s a canvassing trip with something extra. We’re knocking doors in Joliet to introduce Congresswoman Lauren Underwood to voters in new parts of her 14th district. The extra-special: We’ll be joined by Rep Underwood herself and 3rd district Congresswoman-to-be Delia Ramirez!

On Saturday August 20th, 9:30 am-3:00 pm, we’ll be talking with voters who may not know much about Lauren Underwood and aren’t used to voting in midterms. To keep her seat and continue her stellar congressional career, Rep. Underwood needs them to turn out in November.

Delia Ramirez will join us at our Chicago meet-up spot, Colectivo Coffee-Logan Square at 2261 N Milwaukee. She will travel with us, and Lauren Underwood will greet us in Joliet. Sign up here.

Beginners are welcome! We’ll provide all the training you need, and pair you with a veteran canvasser if you like. We’ll arrange carpools from Chicago, or you can meet us in Joliet if you prefer.

Take advantage of this chance to win some votes and meet these two incredible women. Sign up!

TONIGHT: Rally to End Torture at Menard: Mon. Aug 1

From CAARPR:Join CAARPR downtown tonight, Monday, August 1st at 6:00 PM at 190 N. State St. to demand an end to the torture at Menard Prison. Our loved ones held at Menard have experienced harassment, mistreatment, neglect, abuse, repression, and, in the case of Michael Jefferson and many more, death at the hands of Menard staff and the Illinois Department of “Corrections” (IDOC).

We are calling on IDOC Director Rob Jeffreys and Governor Pritzker to act NOW to address these conditions and bring our loved ones home!

Our demands are:

  • Transfer Michael Minnifield, Isaiah Brady, and Chaz Thrailkill out of Menard immediately!
  • Conduct an independent investigation into the conditions at Menard!
  • Pass the Isolated Confinement Restriction Act HB 3564 NOW!
  • Hold guards who have abused our loved ones accountable!
  • Shut Down Menard!

We ask all those who are able to come out and join us as we bring these demands forward in a demonstration. We need every person who can to join us in raising these demands, until Rob Jeffreys and JB Pritzker ACT to address the needs of our loved ones, and until this crisis has the attention it needs.

Get updates on this demonstration at the Facebook event page.

TOMORROW: Zoom Meet/Support Rep Underwood, Aug 2

From Deb Rosenberg (a friend of our group): My husband, Peter Scheff, and I are on the host committee for an online fundraiser and conversation with Congresswoman Lauren Underwood on Tuesday, August 2, from 5:00-6:00 pm and we’re hoping you’ll join us on Zoom. RSVP

The host committee has asked Lauren to engage with us in a substantive conversation about the current political situation and her perspective on the November elections.

Democrats currently have only a four-seat margin in the House, and with five battleground seats in Illinois alone, keeping Lauren Underwood’s seat is essential to maintaining a Democratic majority in Congress.
Two terms into her service, Lauren Underwood continues to make us proud. It’s on us to make sure she has the resources she needs to be successful in 2022.
Join Deb Rosenberg and the committee online on Tuesday August 2nd, 5:00-6:00 pmRSVP / DONATE HERE. If you’d rather donate with a check, please make it payable to “Lauren Underwood for Congress” and send to: 13400 S. Route 59, Suite 116, Box 248, Plainfield, IL 60585.

DemCast is an advocacy-based 501(c)4 nonprofit. We have made the decision to build a media site free of outside influence. There are no ads. We do not get paid for clicks. If you appreciate our content, please consider a small monthly donation.

The mission of Indivisible Chicago - South Side is to unite south siders to fight for progressive values by exerting grassroots influence on our elected officials.
