Hello, Indivisible Venturans!
We are almost 100% late every day, so keep ahead of events here: tinyurl.com/VC-calendar
This last week was incredibly busy with Roe v. Wade/Planned Parenthood issues, including an in-person gathering with Justice For All and community members at Cemetery Park in Ventura to discuss our resistance community’s next moves. So this is what we have for you to work on…
FIGHT BACK – ACTIONS FOR ABORTION RIGHTS
VOLUNTEER TO HELP ON PROP. 1 – Right to Reproductive Freedom AmendmentWhat’s in the amendment? “The state shall not deny or interfere with an individual’s reproductive freedom in their most intimate decisions, which includes their fundamental right to choose to have an abortion and their fundamental right to choose or refuse contraceptives.” As of June 24, 2022, abortion was legal in California up to fetal viability and after viability if the procedure is necessary to protect the life or health of the mother.”

Share this graphic everywhere! It takes you straight to the volunteer sign-in page! At the local level, our Planned Parenthood affiliate is planning canvassing, phonebanking, textbanking, and postcards campaigns, so there’s something for everyone.

We believe that this is a pivotal campaign, not just in reiterating what the majority of our residents believes, but in sending a message to all the red states that we will fight back against any encroachment of religion-based extremism on our civil rights.
On the surface, it would seem that the passage of Prop.1 should be a no-brainer in a big, blue state like California. However, it has been proven repeatedly that we are as easily deceived by big-money campaigns as anybody else.
- Prop. 8: Yeah, that was us, passing the odious Prop. 8, dehumanizing the LGBTQ+ community back in the day.
- Prop. 22: More recently, our voters were fooled into passing Prop. 22 – which stripped newly-awarded worker benefits from gig workers, courtesy of a $200 million dollar campaign funded by Uber&Friends. (https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2020-10-16/skelton-proposition-22-uber-lyft-independent-contractors)
- Measures A and B: And in our most recent ridiculous loss, with only 40% voter turnout, the oil industry’s expensive and duplicitous campaign – featuring solemn guys in button-down shirts intoning warnings against bringing drilling practices up to modern environmental standards – convinced approximately 20% of our voters to continue risking our air, water, agriculture industry and the health of those who live next door to it. So, in the fight for Prop. 1, it would be foolish to assume that:
A) that the opposition isn’t already committing hundreds of millions to fight this,
B) that their tear-jerking flyers and baby-parts filled commercials won’t be arriving in our mailboxes and on our media devices any day now, and continue in an unrelenting stream until after the election, and
C) that we can take anything for granted.

Start small. Ask your legislators to declare forcing kids to give birth a form of child abuse nationwide. (Email this weekend, call on Monday!)
On Thursday, GOP Sen. James Lankford (Okla.) blocked a Democratic request to unanimously pass a bill seeking to protect interstate travel for abortion, being enough of a d**k to label desperate people traveling to find reproduction services at great difficulty and expense “Abortion Tourism.”
This is going to be a process, so let’s start small. Right where they get so nervous, and they start forgetting their lines.
Follow Black women back to the real constitution. (Updated 7.15.22) (Email this weekend, call on Monday!)
(UPDATED: HHS Sec. Beccera just issued a directive. Now we’ve added a letter to him too.)
We respect law professor Michelle Goodwin’s analysis of the living power of the 13th Amendment to reach through history to protect Black women’s bodily autonomy in the present day. We’re asking our legislators to respect it too, and write a bill protecting abortion rights using it as a basis. We also asking President Biden to:
– protect both pharmacists and access for people who need medications that might also be considered abortifascients.
– Declare that forced-birth for minors is child abuse.
– Declare protection for those seeking abortions under the 1st, 8th and 13th amendments.
The Supreme Court is deleting democracy. (Updated on 7-12-2022) (Email this weekend, call on Monday!)
(This is an action package we handed out to people at the street fair. It includes actions as well as instructions on how and why to call our own legislators. Share it with those in Red states as well.)
Update: Added more bills to Action #3!
– Action #1: Expand and rebalance this lawless Court with H.R. 2584/S.1141 – Judiciary Act of 2021. It no longer represents the American public.
-Action #2: Supreme Court justices should not be above the law. “YES” on the Judicial Ethics and Anti-Corruption Act and the Supreme Court Ethics Act.
-Action #3: Call your legislators to put private information off-limits!
-Action #4 Chat with Joe.
-Action #5: Help fund non-profit organizations that help women access healthcare.
Newsbreak for Week of July 15.
It’s been a pretty grim week, what with the GOP trying to figure out if 10-year-olds are acceptable political sacrifices to their dark ambitions and proponents of Christofascism/Christian Nationalism openly declaring that “they will go “beyond denominational lines” to enforce their viewpoints. (https://www.newsweek.com/evangelical-christians-viral-video-america-flashpoint-atlanta-god-1724670)) However, just in time, here’s this week’s list of good things that have happened because people of conscience have fought back!
JOIN THE POSTCARD BRIGADE!!
You Can Make a Difference! Do you want to help Democrats win in the 2022 elections? You can write Get Out The Vote (GOTV) postcards to help get Democratic voters to the polls! Studies have shown that receiving a colorful postcard with a short punchy message is the most effective way to persuade a voter to get to the polls. One of Indivisible Ventura’s members is working with Postcards to Swing States (PSS) to coordinate GOTV postcarding focused on Senate races in swing states. PSS identifies the campaigns, writes the message, and provides the voter names and addresses. She will provide the cards and, if needed, the stamps.
If you want to participate, please send an email to her at email@example.com. She will add you to her writer roster and email you a description of the campaigns she is currently running. You decide which campaigns you want to join and specify the number of cards you want. If you live locally, you may collect your supplies from her address in Ventura. She can also will snail mail your packet to youResist every damn day! – Debby Millais, Postcard Wrangler
