New Leadership – New Strategy

Friday, June 24, 2022 NOON

New leadership brings more people to the table for innovative strategic thinking.

This week on the Friday Power Lunch we will have an up close and personal conversation with the new Democratic leadership of the Virginia House of Delegates: Chair Del. Don Scott Jr. and Vice Chair of Outreach Del. Dan Helmer. After the devastating loss in 2021, there is much to discuss as the House prepares to win back the majority in 2023!

“I know Don [Scott] better than most as we both represent Portsmouth and House Dems are getting a leader of integrity, grit and smarts that will lead them back into the majority,” Senator Louise Lucas, D-Portsmouth.

“The Geographical diversity of the two new leaders will be good for the caucus and the Commonwealth.” Del. Angelia Williams Graves, D-Norfolk.

“Scott is bringing Democrats to the table from across the state. He wants people who disagree with him at the table. The idea is that with all voices heard, Democrats can craft the best policy and govern successfully.” Del. Karrie Delaney, D-Fairfax.

Next, we will celebrate Network NOVA’s 6th Annual Women’s Summit in-person events by speaking with two representatives from Northern Virginia: Representative Don Beyer (CD 8) and Representative Gerry Connolly (CD 11), as well as community leader, civic engagement strategist, candidate for Mayor of Fairfax, Catherine Read about the role the Women’s Summit plays to inspire activists to stay involved and even run for office!

Urge your Senators to vote for the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act. The vote is expected by the end of the week. This bill includes $15 billion for mental health programs and school security. It also closes the domestic violence “Boyfriend Loophole.” Though the bill does not include a ban on Assault Weapons or high-capacity magazines, it contains the “most significant new gun restrictions since the 1990s.” [Wash Post]
