BADASS Briefing, June 17, 2022

Dear Friends,

Here we go — we’re moving fast into an active summer!.  We start with the nation’s youngest national holiday, Juneteenth, marking the final emancipation of enslaved people in the Confederacy. Hope you will make time to join one of the many Juneteenth events throughout the Commonwealth this weekend. Google “Juneteenth Events, Virginia” and you’ll be delighted with wonderful choices.

I’ll start out with Calls to Action and then I’ll share what’s up this weekend and next week. There’s still time to sign up for the 6th Annual Women’s Summit, ALL IN to Win Virginia, which kicks off in NoVA on June 24-25. It’s going to be awesome and you being with us will make it even better!

URGENT Call to Action on Gun Violence Protection.

The House passed the Protecting Our Kids Act, which would: Ban high capacity magazines; Raise the age to buy military-style rifles to 21; Create federal law/penalties on straw purchasing, gun trafficking; Promote safe storage; Ban bump stocks and ghost guns. This is critical legislation that we must make sure is passed in the Senate. Use this link  to contact each of your Senators, asking them to vote YES on HR7910. We will need some Republican support too, so please also share this CTA with your friends and family in other states! You can also retweet Don Beyer or other legislators, to make sure info on HR7910 goes viral!

Stop Environmental Injustice and Inequity on African American Communities

Please lend your support to request that Senators Mark Warner and Tim Kaine come personally visit the Brown Grove Community in Hanover County, Virginia, to help craft a solution that will stop the erasure of this historic African American community. Click here to take action.

Campaign Finance Reform – Advocacy Begins

In anticipation of influencing legislators to implement campaign finance reform in Virginia, the MoneyOut group is asking for early action to push for the timely convocation of the Joint Sub-Committee on Campaign Finance Reform. Demand Climate Transparency

If you pay sales tax in Virginia, your money gets invested in companies that fund climate change. Now you can take action to require all U.S. companies to stop greenwashing and report on their true climate risks, by submitting a comment to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) by June 17. Use this easy one click action to submit a comment to the SEC.  Share this social media post to encourage others to join you.

Mountain Valley Pipeline

Dominion Energy shareholders voted over 80% in support of a resolution to require Dominion to report on their climate risk for natural gas. Dominion’s contract with Mountain Valley Pipeline is an example of an unnecessary project that would hurt shareholders and the environment. Amplify the pressure on Dominion to exit their contract with MVP by going to this digital toolkit which will be updated with talking points for letters to the editor and other easy to use social media posts like these: Retweet 1  @DominionEnergy #ExitMVP  Retweet 2  @DominionEnergy #ExitMVP
