States Matter!

State policy becomes national policy, state leaders become national leaders, and states are the bulwark against an activist Supreme Court and chaos at the federal level.

SCROLL DOWN — THERE’S LOTS GOING ON!

New Hampshire

The NH Senate recently approved SB 418, a bill that could introduce confusion and uncertainty into NH’s elections, delay election results (potentially jeopardizing New Hampshire’s first-in-the-nation presidential primary), and generally make it harder to vote. The bill now heads to the desk of Gov. Sununu, who has indicated he is likely to sign it into law. According to senior staff attorney at the NH ACLU, “SB 418 is a solution in search of a problem.”

  • Join Common Cause in calling voters in New Hampshire to connect them with Gov. Sununu and encourage him to veto SB 418. Training provided at the start of each session. Tuesdays 4–6 pm. SIGN UP HERE!

Wisconsin

Help protect voters from intimidation. Voter intimidation at the polls has risen dramatically in Wisconsin. It is likely to get worse. Help protect the vote in Wisconsin by recruiting poll observers for the August election! Poll observers are the eyes and ears of the WisDems at polling locations, and they need your help to recruit them so that voters can safely and easily cast their ballots.

  • Recruit poll observers via a supported phone bank.  There are several time slots weekly. SIGN UP HERE!

North Carolina

To ensure victory in North Carolina in November, we’ll need every last volunteer. Each volunteer who makes calls to voters freesup staff and local volunteers to knock on doors and connect person-to-person. Face-to-face conversations are the most effective way to turn out voters.

  • Not ready to make those candidate calls yourself? Find someone who is! Join All In for NC to call and activate past volunteers. We’ll call friendly, appreciative people who share our values and concerns and who have already proven they will make calls for candidates.  SIGN UP HERE for training; get in touch with Dana for more information.

Pennsylvania

Take Action: PA and WI on June 14th, 5:30 to 7:00. After a brief overview of what is at stake in PA and WI (just about everything!) and voting rights issues, we will focus on specific actions. There will be information on how to sign up and what to expect. SIGN UPFeatured actions:

  • RepresentUs is protecting the embattled bi-partisan Wisconsin Election Commission by educating voters and supporting poll workers.
  • WisDems Voter Protection team is recruiting poll observers for the August primary and the November general election.
  • Sister District is supporting state legislative candidates. With new more fair maps, Dems have a real shot at flipping the PA House of Representatives.
  • Red2Blue volunteers are assisting the New Pennsylvania Project’s effort to register new voters including many new citizens.

Fund the Movement

There is much at stake in Pennsylvania in 2022. There are open seats for Governor, Lt Governor, Attorney General, and Senate. Of course, all of the US House seats are in play.

Nothing is more exciting than the fact that with new fairer state legislative maps, Dems have a real shot at flipping the PA House of Representatives. They also need to hold or make inroads in the less favorable State Senate map.

Join Lean Left in supporting a set of nested state legislative races (one State Senate and three State House) that can change the balance of power in Harrisburg to protect abortion rights, pass gun control legislation and fight for other progressive values.

State Senator Katie Muth is a fragile incumbent. She was first elected in 2018 when she defeated the Republican incumbent. She has been a champion of environmental protection, even taking on her own party over gas lines. The Republicans want this seat back!

State Representative Dan Williams is a House incumbent whose district lies within Katie’s. With 2020 redistricting, his district has changed a great deal. He has to introduce himself to his new constituents.

Challenger Cathy Spahr’s district also overlaps Katie’s. Democrats have come close to flipping this one in the last two elections. As a working single mother of two, Cathy understands well the challenges facing working families.

Challenger Paul Friel narrowly lost to the Republican incumbent in his district (embedded in Katie’s Senate district) in 2020. Paul is a small business owner with strong and deep ties to his district including as a current member of his local school board.

Dear Lean Left,
I just wanted to drop a quick note to say thank you for all of the small dollar donations my campaign has received from your amazing supporters in VT.  Please let them know how much I appreciate them and that they truly are making a difference for races like mine in PA!
           —Katie

Upcoming Events

New Hampshire, Team Power Lunch, Thursday, June 16 at 12:00. We have updates on the district maps — good news for a change. (News story here.) There will also be an update on canvassing. We have new information to make it easier to sign up. Come share your ideas and experiences and make plans on how we can support our neighbors in their effort to bring democracy back to the Granite State. SIGN UP HERE

Let’s Flip the New Hampshire House, Tuesday, June 21, 6-7: State legislatures directly affect people’s lives. The New Hampshire House of Representatives must flip to Blue, if for no other reason than it selects the Secretary of State. Out of 400 House members, 150 can be identified as right-wing. In 2020 the House was lost by 1,316 votes, and 17 districts were lost by under 200 votes. The right-wing has control of 83 house districts and 80 towns. What this means literally is that every single vote counts. Jonathan George, Executive Director of the New Hampshire House Dems Victory Committee, will give us the details about how the Dems can best support the effort to take back the House and the Executive Council. SIGN UP HERE!

An Evening with NC State Senator Sydney Batch, Monday, June 27 at 8 pm. Join Lean Left and co-sponsors for an evening with NC State Senator Sydney Batch, with a special guest appearance from NC State Representative Ricky Hurtado! Re-electing Sydney is critical in order to protect Gov Cooper’s veto and ensure continued forward progress in North Carolina. Senator Batch will discuss her priorities, her district, and the dynamics of her re-election campaign. And you can donate right then and there to help Sydney hire talent and build a winning campaign! Sign up here!
