“The temptation is powerful to close our eyes…”

19 mins read

Hello Ventura Indivisians,

(Yes, it’s been awhile since you’ve seen an official newsletter, so there’s a lot here today as we catch up!)
The late diplomat and political scientist Madeleine Albright said: “The temptation is powerful to close our eyes and wait for the worst to pass, but history tells that for freedom to survive, it must be defended, and that if lies are to stop, they must be exposed.”
The GOP would have us close our eyes to what they’ve become, and what they intend to do if they retake power, with the able collaboration of legislators, the media and corporations. The 2020 election was not an endpoint to our march towards authoritarianism, but a crossroads. Our work together, calling out the erosion of democracy by all three forces, is more urgent than ever.

“YES on Measures A & B” – How to help!
If what Aera Energy’s website states is true – “we are relentless in our efforts to produce energy safely and in an environmentally responsible way,” why are they part of a $6.5 million dollar campaign to avoid modern environmental review and not, in fact, leading the charge? What’s happening with Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson and that insulin bill?
Judge Jackson is expected to get confirmed in a tie vote in the Judiciary Committee on Monday and sent to the floor. The Democrats in the Senate  hope to have her confirmed before they leave on their April 8 recess. Meanwhile, both our senators are listed as cosponsors of the S.3700 – Affordable Insulin Now Act, so let’s do a double “thank you” to both of them.
Minimal script: I’m calling from [zip code] and I want to thank Sen. [Padilla, Feinstein] both for publicly supporting the nomination of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court and for supporting S.3700 – Affordable Insulin Now Act.

Yes on H.R.6872/S.3142 – Election Worker and Polling Place Protection Act.
Minimal script for reps: I’m calling from [zip code] and I want Rep. [___] to both support and vote “YES” for H.R.6872/S.3142 – Election Worker and Polling Place Protection Act.

“YES” on H.R.1470/S.492 – Ending Qualified Immunity Act (more info)
This bill closes one unintended loophole in the derailed “George Floyd” version – it applies to ALL state and local government officials, not just law enforcement. Qualified immunity came before the Judiciary Committee Subcommittee on Constitution, Civil Rights, and Civil Liberties last week and bill author Rep. Ayanna Pressley wants us to uplift this bill now.
Minimal script: I’m calling from [zip code] and I want Rep./Sen. [___] to cosponsor and actively support H.R. 1470/S.492 – Ending Qualified Immunity Act, which would remove the protective shield from all state and local government employees who abuse their position of power to harm others.

  • H.R. 1470 – Cosponsors here: Brownley and Carbajal are not yet cosponsors.
  • S.492 – Cosponsors here. Senators Feinstein and Padilla are not yet cosponsors.

– Action #2: Tell our legislators to do their part by passing this list of anti-price gouging acts.
Minimal script for reps: I’m calling from [zip code] and I want Rep. [___] to both support and vote “YES” for H.R. 675 – the COVID-19 Price Gouging Prevention Act, H.R.7061/S.3802 – Big Oil Windfall Profits Tax Act and H.R.7099 – Stop Gas Price Gouging Tax and Rebate Act

EMAIL ACTIONS

Advocate for local independence from federal immigration enforcement.
Sample script: Dear Secretary Mayorkas, I’m contacting you from [TOWN, STATE] as a member of Indivisible to support ending collusion between localities and federal immigration enforcement agencies. Protective, pro-immigrant policies are necessary for vibrant, healthy, and trusting communities—yet DHS agencies have historically perpetuated harm in the daily lives of aspiring Americans, through ongoing policing and prolonged, inhumane detention of community members. I’m joining more than 170 organizations in urging you to affirmatively terminate 287(g) agreements, as well as the so-called Secure Communities program. Thank you.

(FAQ: Are there 287(g) agreements in CA? Yes, there are still three, according to ilrc.org.)

Seriously, CBS? Walter Cronkite must be spinning… (more info)
CBS, nobody wants to see or hear from the scoundrels behind the most corrupt administration in history ever again and that goes double for Ukrainian-extortion-enabler Mick Mulvaney. The cynical calculation behind his hiring is shameful.

Tell these 6 companies that they can’t claim to support women while donating to GOP legislators
Judd Legum of Popular Information compared the public statements of six corporations in support of women’s rights, to their donation history to extremist legislators dedicated to removing those rights.
The top six corporate hypocrites funding the legislators behind these horrible bills are listed here, with sample letters and contact information. And thanks to their funding, the danger to women is escalating. A legislator in TX has proposed legislation to subject women who get abortions to jail time and the death penalty. Other red states will not be far behind. Sample letters and contact information here.

“Aid and Comfort” to an enemy of democracy – there is now a list.
The very first definition of aid and comfort to an enemy is to provide them money. Jeffrey Sonnenfeld of Yale University created a list of corporations who have commerial ties to Russia, and has organized it into tiers of how responsibly they are reacting to Putin’s crimes against humanity. We’ve included sample emails, contact information and links to additional information. The action will be updated as companies make their choices.
Update: Bodies of “executed people” are being found after Russian troops retreat.
