Dear Friends,

Happy St Patrick’s Day for all who celebrate and hope to see you this evening at Gerry Connolly’s 28th Annual Fete.

Along with this week’s Friday Power Lunch (we have a great show planned that starts with a discussion on local media and moves to a discussion on the importance of documenting our role in contemporary history), we have much to bring our attention to in the next few days.

We have Fairfax County (foodie) Fundraiser for Jennifer Wexton; the bi-weekly meeting of the Virginia Redress Network; a report on Campaign Finance Reform; and the high school “Rise To” Summit in Loudoun.

Enjoy,

Stair

More than Just Words

Friday Power Lunch, March 18, 2022 noon ET

Over the past 20 plus years, these local and trusted news sources have disappeared leaving the door open for misinformation, conspiracy theories and lies on social media. This lack of credible, fact-based reporting now threatens our Democracy. Meghan McCarthy (VP of Content at Courier Newsroom) will join us to talk about how Courier Newsroom is “building a network of mission-driven local newsrooms across the country to create a more informed, engaged, and representative America working to bring back local news.” Meghan will also discuss how their Virginia paper, Dogwood, seeks to partner with grassroots activists across the state for news and information.

The story of our work as activists over the past six years is the history of our time. For Women’s History Month we are celebrating our role in history as captured in the documentary Resisterhood. Filmmaker CJ Crim and three activists featured in the film–Mimi Hassanein (Egyptian grandmother who ran for office in Maryland), Margaret Morrison (Civil rights activist) and Luis Gutierrez (Former Congressman from Illinois) will join us for a roundtable conversation on the film, how and why they resisted, and the importance of documenting our history.
