To our Senators: Eliminate the filibuster. Protect democracy.

Even if you can’t attend the vigil, you can still work on the “Action” part of the Day of Remembrance and Action by calling your Senators to demand they pass voting rights legislation.

On Monday, Senator Schumer sent out a “dear colleague” letter – if Republicans keep filibustering to block voting rights legislation, “the Senate will vote on a debate and consider changes to Senate rules on or before January 17, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, to protect the foundation of our democracy: free and fair elections.”

We’re asking Sen. Feinstein to finally step up to protect our democracy, and support leadership on the call to change Senate rules and pass voting rights legislation. And we’re letting Sen. Padilla know he has our full support and encouragement to completely eliminate the filibuster. Example call scripts and contact information are below.

On this January 6th, exactly one year later, Americans across race, place, party, and background, are holding a candlelight vigil to say: in America, the voters decide the outcome of elections. Sponsored by League of Women Voters Davis Area, Sister District CA3, Indivisible Yolo & Democracy Winters.

Sen. Feinstein: Fix the filibuster

Sample Call Script: (your own words are best)
Hi, my name is [name]. I’m a voter and a constituent of Senator Feinstein. My zip code is [zip code].

In April 2021, State Director Jim Lazarus said Senator Feinstein would make voting rights her number one priority and that Senator Feinstein would support 100% whatever approach Senate leadership took to get voting rights to a vote on the floor. In the months since, as one by one her Senate colleagues came out in favor of reforming the filibuster to  protect voting rights, Senator Feinstein remained quiet.

Now Senator Schumer has announced intent to “debate and consider changes to Senate rules on or before” Martin Luther King Jr. Day. In his letter to his colleagues, Senator Schumer plainly stated that the “Senate must evolve” to protect the right to vote.

Will Senator Feinstein make a statement backing Senator Schumer and finally make it clear that Senate rules must yield to the cornerstone of our democracy, the right to vote?

If she can not support leadership, I ask Senator Feinstein to step down as as our Senator. I will be watching for a statement from her today.

Sen. Padilla: You have our support for ending the filibuster!

Sample Call Script: (your own words are best)
Hi, my name is [name]. I’m a voter and a constituent of Senator Padilla. My zip code is [zip code].

I am encouraged to see Senator Schumer announce plans to debate and consider changes to the senate rules by or on Martin Luther King Day. I want Senator Padilla to know he has my full support in eliminating the filibuster completely. We need to pass voting rights legislation such as the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, and to restore the the Senate to a functioning body instead of allowing Republicans to block all forward progress.

Thank you for your leadership, Senator Padilla, Keep fighting for us.
