TOYS FOR TOTS DRIVE

We had a successful event last Saturday, where people generously donated to our Toys for Tots Drive. However, we want to be even more successful in this drive! Therefore, we are adding office hours from 11 AM to 1 PM this Saturday (12/11) to give people another opportunity to bring in toys. Please consider donating a new, unwrapped toy or two! Your donation can really mean a lot to a child here in the Lowcountry for the holidays!

Our office has limited public hours due to COVID, but if you are dropping off donations, you can email wecare@charlestondemocrats.com to arrange a drop off time.

SOUTH CAROLINA REDISTRICTING

While the South Carolina state legislature is currently passing its maps, you can still investigate the maps below, along with the US Congress draft map for redistricting, which the legislature has put on hold for the time being. Please take a look at these draft maps through the buttons below.

UPDATE: The SC State House passed their redistricted map 100-15, and the SC State Senate passed their map 41-2 and the House map 43-1.

STATE LEGISLATURE PREFILED BILLS

It’s that time again! Time for our State House and Senate members to prefile bills. Prefiling is the process where a bill is introduced and sometimes referred to the appropriate committee prior to the start of the legislative session. So far this year, State House members have prefiled 74 bills, and State Senate members have prefiled 71.

Legislators prefile bills to help show the public what their priorities are as they head into the legislative session. This is your earliest chance to voice your opposition to those bills that don’t agree with your vision of the direction the state should head in.

These bills are formal legislative proposals which allow for legislators to co-sponsor the bill or opponents to build opposition to it. Bills prefiled before the official start of the legislative session will notmove within the legislature until the first day of session, which is January 11, 2022.

Prefiled bills from the legislators can be found here: https://www.scstatehouse.gov/sessphp/prefil21.php

We urge you browse through the prefiled bills and educate yourself on what our legislators will be trying to accomplish this year.

This is the time for action! Call or write your legislators and let them know how you feel about their bills. We must let them know that we are watching and willing to get loud against bad bills and in favor of good ones. If you don’t know who your legislators are, you can look them up here: https://www.scstatehouse.gov/legislatorssearch.php

Our office is open! We are in need of volunteers to work during office hours. Volunteers will prepare mailings, phone and/or text Bank, fill the blessing box, build Homeless Period Project packs and other tasks as needed.

Due to COVID-19, our office hours are limited. We will be open on Wednesdays only from 11-3. We plan on opening on Saturdays as well after the holidays.

Lowcountry Period Project Supplies Needed!
Did you know that our volunteers build period packs in support of the Homeless Period Project? The project provides pre-made kits for homeless shelters and nurse’s offices at Title IX schools in the Lowcountry. These items are a luxury to homeless women and girls and many are forced to choose between hygiene and food. Please consider donating the following items so we can continue to support this amazing project!

READY TO RUN FOR OFFICE?

If you are interested in making a difference in your community, please take time to consider running for office. The South Carolina Democratic Party has put out a form for individuals to express interest in running. You may think that it is too early to start thinking about this, but electoral success will require carefully laid out plans, which in turn require time. In addition to the SCDP information that you can access through the button below, here are more resources for women considering a run for office:
