Feinstein: Time to Step Up or Step Down

5 mins read

Feinstein: Fix the Filibuster!
After months of calls, voting rights protests in Davis and Sacramento last summer, and joining FightBack Friday events in Sacramento and San Francisco, IY joined with a coalition of 68 other activist groups representing 150,000 members throughout California to send a letter to Senator Feinstein outlining the case for a new demand for Sen. Dianne Feinstein: publicly support abolishing or fixing the filibuster by November 30 so that voting reform bills can be passed by a simple majority, or step down immediately and let the governor appoint a replacement who will.

She hasn’t responded yet but the effort garnered both national and statewide coverage including The Hill and SacBee.

This week we’ll be following up with calls to her office to insist she do everything in her power to publicly and privately advocate for fixing the filibuster to ensure passage of the Freedom to Vote Act and John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act before the Senate adjourns at the end of 2021. It’s time to make calls daily to Senator Feinstein to protect our democracy.

A quick update on Build Back Better:
Build Back Better made it through the House and now heads to the Senate! Both Rep. Garamendi and Rep. Matsui voted for BBB- getting this through the House was a huge step; let’s tell them we appreciate it. Here’s a short summary of what’s in the Build Back Better bill we’re now urging our Senators to get passed this week: https://indivisible.org/resource/build-back-better-act-explained.

It’s urgent to fix the filibuster and protect voting rights! We’re calling Sen. Feinstein this week to tell her she needs to step up.

Sen. Feinstein: End the filibuster and protect voting rights!

Sample Call Script:
Hi, my name is [name]. I’m a voter and a constituent of Senator Feinstein. My zip code is [zip code].

I am calling today to urge Senator Feinstein to publicly advocate for fixing or abolishing the filibuster and work with her fellow Democratic Senators to see the Freedom to Vote Act and John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act are passed before the holiday recess. Extremist politicians have spent the year putting up barriers to voting in one state after another and are now drawing districts to benefit themselves. We cannot wait; the time is NOW. Senator Feinstein must prioritize the rights of voters over Senate rules.

Sen. Feinstein and Sen. Padilla: Pass BBB ASAP!

Sample Call Script:
Hi, my name is [name]. I’m a voter and a constituent of [Senator Feinstein/Sen. Padilla].  My zip code is [zip code].

I’m calling Sen. [Feinstein/Padilla] to ask [her/him] to pass the Build Back Better Act this week- we urgently need to invest in climate action, in supporting children and families, in affordable housing, and more. Thank you.

Tell Rep. Garamendi OR Rep. Matsui: Thank you for your vote on Build Back Better!

(Note: only contact your own Representative. You can find out whether it’s Garamendi or Matsui here)

Sample Call Script:
Hello, my name is [name]. I’m a voter and a constituent of Rep. [Garamendi/Matsui]. My zip code is [zip code].

I’m calling Rep. [Garamendi/Matsui] to say “thank you!” for supporting the Build Back Better Act. This bill is incredibly important to me because [Fill in your reason]. I’m grateful to see my representative advocating for [his/her] constituents by passing this bill.
