Indivisible Florida Network Event:
Advocacy for home rule and why state preemption is hurting Florida

Thursday, August 12, 7 – 8pm EDT
Online Event
DeSantis is doing it again, preempting local school boards from requiring masks. This is only one example of how the legislators in Tallahassee are stepping on the rights of local communities.
Join us to hear from Carlos Guillermo Smith a Florida lawmaker and Ben Wilcox with Integrity Florida to learn more about advocacy for home rule and why some state preemption is hurting Florida.
We will break down home rule and preemption and why do they matter?

Parents over Politicians Letter Campaign

As Floridians, we elect local school board members to decide how to best educate and protect our children. Why do we do this, if the Governor can simply threaten them and take the power we have entrusted in them? Tom Grady, the chairman of the Board of Education, recently stated “You can’t have more local control than control by the parent”. However, Governor Ron DeSantis has recently issued an executive order which threatens local school boards with defunding if they mandated mask compliance in their school districts, thus holding local school boards hostage and forcing compliance with his own partisan positions which is directly opposite of what the CDC and other experts are suggesting to help fight the spread of COVID-19 and its variants, and opposite of what our local school board members have decided is in the best interests of their students, our children. This bears repeating – Governor DeSantis is threatening to withhold school funding, which directly impacts their school, education and safety, unless the local schools follow his politically-driven mandates. Please, today, take one minute (1) to send a message to support masking in schools for as long as it takes to keep our community safe.

March On For Voting Rights Tampa Bay

Saturday, August 28, 2021, Noon
St. Petersburg City Hall
175 5th St N, St.
Petersburg, FL 33701
March On for Voting Rights is a mass mobilization to demand that elected officials stop hijacking democracy, denounce voter suppression and ensure fair, easy access to the vote for all.
On August 28, the 58th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr’s historic March on Washington, we will march on cities across America to demand that the vision of MLK’s “I Have a Dream” speech be deferred no longer. We invite all Americans who believe in the power of democracy and free elections to join us. Marches will take place in states where voter suppression efforts are already imperiling our democracy: Atlanta, Georgia; Miami, Florida; Phoenix, Arizona; Houston, Texas; in Washington, D.C.; and across the country.
Join us in St Petersburg, FL at St. Petersburg City Hall, 175 5th St N, St. Petersburg, FL 33701
Due to the increasing rise in cases of the Delta variant and the new mask guidelines the CDC has issued, masks are required to be worn by attendees.
This event is sponsored by Indivisible Safety Harbor North Pinellas, Indivisible FL-13, Keep Pinellas Blue, St Pete for Change and Fired Up Pinellas.

Florida: My Story by Rebekah Jones

Rebekah Jones is a Florida scientist and whistleblower who became a national cause célèbre when she exposed the state of Florida for manipulating data during the COVID-19 crisis. Since her ousting by the Florida Governor, Jones has been recognized by professional, academic and medical leaders across the country for her efforts in combating misinformation online.
With a background in climate science, geography and disaster response, Jones’ research and work centers on scientific research and communication about how climate change impacts extreme weather.
Jones fought against personal attacks and smear campaigns orchestrated by the Republican governor, and won international awards and recognition for refusing to be silenced – even after the governor sent state police to raid her family home at gunpoint. She is currently running for US House District 1 against Matt Gaetz.
Join us to hear her story. Presented by the Indivisible Florida Network.
