End the Filibuster Month

Click here to go straight to the call scripts!

Note: there will be no May 31 Action Coffee due to the Memorial Day Holiday

Hi Indivisibles,

Thank you to everyone who gave input on the draft Indivisible Yolo mission, vision, and values statement. Your input is being used to complete the statement. It was incredible to see everyone’s passion for progressive values and their commitment to doing the work!

This month our actions are to call our Senators and ask them to end the filibuster and pass the For the People act. Senate Republicans have blocked bipartisan legislation to create a commission to investigate the January 6 insurrection at the U.S Capitol. This is low, even for Republicans, especially since Democrats made changes to the bill to earn their support. Even worse, the bill failed even though a majority of the Senate was in favor of passing it — because of the filibuster. If it wasn’t clear before, this failed vote is yet further proof that the filibuster is an obstructionist force in our democracy.
In addition to blocking the January 6 commission bill, Senate Republicans are threatening to filibuster essential democracy reform legislation like S. 1, the For the People Act. This all comes as Republican state legislatures across the country are passing hundreds of sweeping voter suppression laws that all but assure Republican victory in the years to come.

Call your Senators and let them know you want them to eliminate the filibuster to pass critical democracy reforms. We don’t have time to waste.

Why is it so urgent? The For the People Act includes a ton of critically important democracy reforms, including new voter protections and election security provisions that states will need some time to implement prior to the 2022 midterm elections. In addition, the For the People Act includes a provision that bans partisan gerrymandering and requires states to establish independent redistricting commissions to draw fair Congressional maps — in some states, those maps must be drawn and finalized by February 2022. Republicans have proven their bad faith, and we can’t let Democrats waste more time letting them run out the clock while our democracy slips away. We’re calling our Senators and telling them they must end the filibuster and pass S. 1.

One more action for our CA state congressional members: SB 2, Police decertification, has passed in the state Senate and now goes to the Assembly. Per  ACLU California Action: “this bill will ensure those we employ to uphold our laws are held to basic standards. Officers who have been fired for excessive force, sexual assault, and dishonesty should not be able to patrol [our] community. SB 2 will also strengthen CA’s civil rights law to allow individuals or impacted family members who have lost loved ones to seek accountability through civil actions.” We’re going to thank state Sen. Dodd for voting yes on SB 2, and call Assm. Aguiar-Curry to tell her to support it.

We’re pleased to announce that our Action Hour series resumes June 6 at 5pm!

Fixing Our Democracy Action Hour resumes June 6 at 5pm!

It’s showdown time for the filibuster and passing S. 1, so please join us for a month of Sundays starting June 6 at 5PM.   (Details @ https://linktr.ee/dothework2020)
Fixing Our Democracy simply can’t wait. June is END THE FILIBUSTER MONTH! After the Republicans used the filibuster to stop the bipartisan commission to investigate the January 6th insurrection, it’s never been clearer that they have no interest in participating in a bipartisan democracy. Schumer says he plans to get S. 1 passed by putting it on the floor in late June. It’s time to call our Senators and demand we end the filibuster to pass S. 1! While they’re at it, they can pass common sense gun laws and even reconsider the January 6th commission. Only 35 Senators voted against the commission yet that was enough to stop it.  A travesty of minority rule that can only grow worse without S. 1, as state after Republican-controlled state pursues more voter suppression measures. We must act!

Tell our Senators: Time is running out to save our democracy!

Background:
Sen. Padilla has been consistent and vocal about the need to end the filibuster and act on our progressive values. We need to thank him and ask him to continue being speaking up.

We rallied at Sen. Feinstein’s SF office April 6th, telling her she must end the filibuster and support S. 1. Her State Director, Jim Lazarus, promised she will get the For the People Act to the floor for a full vote and that she would not let it be blocked by a Republican filibuster or stripped of its key provisions. On Thursday- just before Republican allies of the attackers on the Capitol blocked a bill to investigate the insurrection- these were her comments to NBC reporter Sahil Kapur: “I don’t see us abolishing the 60-vote threshold. I don’t.” Would she vote to nix? “This is the first time I’ve heard it. No one has proposed it. No one has talked to me about it. So it’s a non-issue.” We need to make sure she hears from us so often she cannot our voice.

Sample Call Script for Sen. Feinstein:
Hello, my name is [YOUR NAME]. I’m a constituent from [CITY, zip code] and I’m a member of Indivisible Yolo.

As Sen. Feinstein well knows, the GOP are engaged in a full-on plan to win the next election via voter suppression. Now they’ve used the filibuster to block a bipartisan bill investigating the insurrection their own leader instigated. I was shocked to hear that just before the vote, she claimed to a reporter that this was the first time she was hearing about ending the filibuster. I’m so disappointed that she would ignore the will of her constituents, and I want to make sure she hears it clearly this time: we must end the filibuster to save our democracy. Wasting time doing nothing as our democracy slips away isn’t an option. She must end the filibuster and pass the For the People Act.

Sample Call Script for Sen. Padilla:
Hello, my name is [YOUR NAME]. I’m a constituent from [CITY, zip code] and I’m a member of Indivisible Yolo.

I’m calling to say I am so glad Sen. Padilla supports ending the filibuster and passing the For the People Act. As Sen. Padilla well knows, the GOP are engaged in a full-on plan to win the next election via voter suppression. Now they’ve used the filibuster to block a bipartisan bill investigating the insurrection their own leader instigated. I want to thank Sen. Padilla for supporting the For the People act, to ask him to continue speaking out about the need to end the filibuster, and to keep trying to convince his more reluctant colleagues. Thank you.

SB 2- police decertification: Thank Sen. Dodd; tell Aguiar-Curry to vote YES

Sample Call Script:
Hello, my name is [YOUR NAME] from [YOUR CITY, ZIP]

I support SB 2, the Kenneth Ross Jr. Decertification Act of 2021, which will establish a decertification process for California’s abusive police officers.

For state Sen. Dodd:
I’m calling to thank Sen. Dodd for voting yes on SB 2. Officers who have been fired for excessive force, sexual assault, and dishonesty should not be able to patrol our community. Thank you.

For state Assm. Aguiar-Curry:
I’m calling to ask Assemblymember Aguiar-Curry to vote YES on SB 2. Officers who have been fired for excessive force, sexual assault, and dishonesty should not be able to patrol our community. Thank you.
