The 45,000 Quilt Exhibit brings together the work of over 60 immigrant justice activists and artists from 12 states and Mexico. Each of the six, 9’ by 9’ panels contain 1000 marks to represent 1000 immigrants placed in detention daily. “The inspiration for the project was the huge number 45,000” said project founder Glen Ring, a member of the Kent St Coalition from Concord NH. 45,000(and often more) is the average number of immigrants detained by ICE per day in 2019.Fleeing violence, poverty, natural disasters and the effects of climate change are the reasons people seek asylum and they are detained or jailed, often in private for-profit detention centers for these “crimes”.
This event is presented locally by Pinellas Coalition for Immigration Justice (PCIJ). The PCIJ is made up of 22 different organizations throughout the Tampa Bay Area consisting of faith-based organizations, advocacy groups and those that provide direct services to non-citizens. The PCIJ advocate that all immigrants receive compassionate, just and dignified treatment — at our borders and within our country — whether they are asylum seekers, refugees or those in search of a better life.
The quilt will be on display Tuesday April 6th through Thursday April 8th hosted by Allendale Methodist Church, 3803 Haines Road North- St. Petersburg, and displayed to the public on the Northwest corner of the Church, on the corner of 38th Ave North and Haines Road.
This event is free for the public and free parking is available at Allendale for those who would like to walk the exhibit. PCIJ activists will be present for discussion and answering questions. For more information email meryl4change@gmail.com
