INDIVISIBLE VENTURA

Hello Ventura Indivisians!

GREAT news! Two of last week’s Calls to Action passed the House – The For the People Act, with it’s sweeping reforms for all three branches of our government and the Protecting America’s Wilderness and Public Lands Act. Time to call our Senators on these!

There are also a few repeats in here that are very important – you can call more than once, so if you did so last week there’s no harm in calling again.

After your calls to action – events and resources!

Your Calls to Action:

For the People Act of 2021: The most important bill for our democracy is still the first one (see more)
It passed the House last night – now let’s call our Senators!
First introducted in 2019, is a collection of reforms to campaign finance, voting rights, and government ethics for ALL THREE BRANCHES of government, including the presidency and the judiciary. After Trump’s real-time master class in corruption, we need this bill’s stronger guardrails more than ever. “Norms” are no longer good enough. H.R. 1 is an important first step towards building an equitable and functional democracy, along with the D.C. statehood bill and H.R.4 – John Lewis Voting Rights Act, without which we can’t achieve any of our other progressive goals.

Minimal script for senators: I’m calling from [zip code] to ask Sen. [___] to support the For the People Act. Addressing corruption, protecting voting rights, and reforming campaign finance should be bipartisan priorities to make our democracy better for all Americans, regardless of their political affiliation. But if the pull of our ex-president proves too strong for GOP senators’ consciences or memories, please use a targeted filibuster to add back the necessary guardrails that went missing during Trump’s reign of corruption for all three branches of government.

Senator Feinstein: email, DC (202) 224-3841, LA (310) 914-7300, SF (415) 393-0707, SD (619) 231-9712, Fresno (559) 485-7430
and Senator Padilla: email, DC (202) 224-3553

The American Rescue Plan could use a couple of extra lifeboats…  (see more)
H.R. 1319 – The American Rescue Plan Act, is popular and full of great things for a country struggling with survival and rebuilding during this pandemic, but a couple of things would make it even better. (No, we’re not talking about the $15 minimum wage…that’s not happening in this bill, unfortunately.) It’s already passed the House, so we need to ask the Senate to amend it with some additional items.

Minimal script: I’m calling from [zip code] to ask Sen. [___] to add some important features to the H.R. 1319 – The American Rescue Plan Act to help struggling Americans.

  • Zero out taxes for unemployment checks for this entire pandemic period. The IRS code excludes government payments made “in connection with a qualified disaster in order to promote the general welfare.” What is the point of a $1400 stimulus check if people just have to send it back to the IRS?
  • Add automatic stabilizers to tie federal aid to economic conditions, so people don’t suffer waiting for new legislation to extend benefits if it becomes necessary.
  • (For GOP senators only) Zero out Pay-Go. This bill is an emergency measure that I, along with the rest of your constituents are expecting you to work together with the Democrats to make happen.

Senator Feinstein: email, DC (202) 224-3841, LA (310) 914-7300, SF (415) 393-0707, SD (619) 231-9712, Fresno (559) 485-7430

Tell our Senators WE EXPECT THEM to take advantage of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to enact bold structural reform on every issue we care about (see more)
Confused as we were at first about the filibuster rule? Click here for a quick video explainer.
We have less than 2 years before the next election and we have a lot to fix NOW! The GOP will use the 60-vote minimum of the filibuster to block progressive legislation from advancing in the Senate, keeping that chamber’s reputation as “the most powerful force for structural racism in American life.” While both parties have used the filibuster, it has been weaponized to a greater extent than ever before by Republicans in order to kill landmark pieces of legislation that the majority of Americans want, from civil rights bill like voting access, to gun violence prevention, the Dream Act, Medicare-for-all and more.

It’s not just Manchin and Sinema who are problematic. Senator Feinstein has stated that she doesn’t want to get rid of the rule. CALL HER!!!

Minimal script: I’m calling from [zip code] and I want Senator [___] to remove the filibuster and get on with passing the bills the majority of Americans want. Civil rights bills like H.R.1 – For the People, H.R. 5 – the Equality Act and H.R. 51- Washington DC Admision Act. Commonsense gun legislation. Legislation to address climate change, childcare, immigration and healthcare. Yes, I understand the risks you think we are taking, but we see greater risks to democracy in never getting these bills passed. We will NOT accept [him/her] coming back to us in two years saying there was nothing [he/she] could do to advance issues important to us because of an self-mandated procedural relic of the Jim Crow era. We know better now, and so does [he/she].

WANTED: Postcard writers for Washington DC statehood and the restoration of asylum (see more)

Washington D.C. is a living, breathing, racial and civil rights injustice and we need to fix it!

If you’re unfamiliar with the hundreds of years that DC residents have been denied statehood, along with the rights we take for granted, like representation along with taxation, the ability to make laws without federal interference, and being able to call up the National Guard when they need it, here’s our post with lots of information and great videos.

Call your senator to support Rep. Deb Haaland’s nomination to become the First Native American Secretary of Interior(see more)

Senator Steve Daines (R-MT) (contributions of over $675,000 from the oil and gas industry), has publicly stated that he’ll block the confirmation of the first Indigenous nominee for Secretary of the Interior, along with the amoral support of his state’s Rep. Matt Rosendale (contributions of $+27k from oil and gas) and the rest of the oil-soaked GOP.

Minimal script: I’m calling from [zip code] and I want Sen. [___] to support Rep. Deb Haaland’s nomination as Secretary of the Interior.

More script if you want it: “She will bring back balance and common sense to the Department of Interior– something that has been sorely lacking for the past four years,” and “ensure a balanced approach to our public lands that is right for wildlife conservation, our communities and future generations.”

Support the WATER Act – Clean water is a human right (see more)
During a pandemic, access to clean water is literally lifesaving. However, our water infrastructure is in a state of emergency. According to EPA estimates, raw sewage overflows at least 23,000 times each year, over 1.7 million people lack access to basic plumbing facilities or running water, almost 200,000 households have no wastewater system and up to 10 million homes get water through lead pipes. And now, water may be unaffordable. Even before the pandemic, 14 million households were unable to afford their water bills, whose prices increased more than 40% since 2010. At this rate, more than a third of households may not be able to afford their water bills five years from now. The WATER Act, which will make clean, affordable water and sewage services availage to millions of American, along with jobs, is long past due.

Minimal script: I’m calling from [zip code] and I want Rep./Sen. [___] to immediately cosponsor and support the new version of 2019’s [Rep. – H.R.1417/Sen. – S.611 Water Affordability, Transparency, Equity and Reliability Act. Maybe it was easy to ignore our crumbling water and sewage infrastructure before the pandemic, but now it’s clear that access to clean, affordable water and adequate sewage are literally life-saving.

Additional script to those who didn’t cosponsor the 2019 bill: Reviewing the records, I noticed that [Rep. Brownley/Sen. Feinstein] did not cosponsor the earlier version of this bill and I will be watching to see that they correct that now.

Additional script to those who did:  I want to thank [Rep. Carbajal)for cosponoring the earlier version of this bill.

Support “Protecting America’s Wilderness and Public Lands Act.”(see more)
Last year, Congress fell short of securing critical protections for wilderness and public lands throughout the West.  H.R. 803 – Colorado Wilderness Act of 2021 [Protecting America’s Wilderness and Public Lands Act“] would protect 2.7 million acres as wilderness and Wild and Scenic Rivers, moving us closer to achieving our national goal of protecting 30 percent of U.S. lands and oceans by 2030. It would conserve wildlife habitat and migration corridors in Colorado, Arizona, Nevada, Washington, and California and expand recreational access for all and support Indigenous Tribes and local economies. (1 page explainer here.) This bill passed the House in late February – Senate, let’s get this done!

Minimal script: I’m calling from [zip code] and I want Sen. [___] to support the Senate version H.R. 803 – “Protecting America’s Wilderness and Public Lands Act.”More script if you want it: What just happened to Texas demonstrated why environmental protection should be a priority. Scientists say that in order to truly respond to the climate and biodiversity crises and create a more sustainable future, we must protect 30 percent of U.S. lands and waters by 2030. This bill will help us move toward that, along with expanding recreational access and supporting local economies.

Stop the Line 3 tar sands pipeline! (see more)

Basics: Line 3 is a tar sands pipeline already under construction in northern Minnesota by Enbridge, the multinational corporation responsible for the largest US inland oil spill. This project to transport a million barrels of corrosive tar sands per day from the world’s most destructive oil operation in Canada, violates treaty rights, risks over 200 bodies of water and untouched wetlands with the threat of an oil spill, and reverses our progress on climate change with a carbon equivalent of 50 coal-fired power plants. It’s being funded by Chase Bank.

Make the calls: Join in today to call Chase Bank’s CEOs, executives, and board members and ask them to stop funding this project. It’s easy to do. Just sign in here and you’ll get a script and they’ll help you dial.

Send some emails: Link hereAdd your voice to the growing demand to banks like Chase, Citi, Bank of America and TD Bank to STOP financing Line 3. Send a direct email to CEOs now to demand that they stop funding the toxic Line 3 pipeline. Your email will go directly to the inboxes of CEOs, executives, and Board members of the banks funding Line 3.

Tell Congress to strengthen the U.S. Postal Service(see more)

Minimal script: I’m calling from [zip code] to ask Rep./Sen [___] to:

  • Passing this year’s bipartisan version of the USPS Fairness Act. [Rep. – H.R.695/Sen. – S.145] (removes the onerous burden of pre-funding retirement.)
  • Ensuring the quick appointment of strong and diverse public service advocates to the USPS Board of Governors who can vote out DeJoy. (Currently, the 6-member board has no Black or women members.)
  • Returning postal banking, and adding other financial services like check-cashing, that help poorer communities.
  • Ensuring that the Postal Service continues to provide good jobs for workers, including Black workers, workers without bachelor’s degrees, and military veterans.
  • Opposing any privatization and outsourcing of USPS services.

Charge ALL the Capitol criminals! (see more)

Write a comment to the Department of Justice

According to an article in the Hill, some officials are thinking of letting the “nonviolent insurrectionists” who invaded our Capitol walk with NO consequences. Tell the DOJ that ALL of them entered our Capitol with the the intent to interfere with the lawful certification of Electoral College votes and should be charged with the appropriate federal crime – and there are several to choose from.

Link to DOJ comment page here. Select “Messages to the Attorney General.” (The tricky bit is to keep it to 2000 characters or less.)  We’ve put all the laws affecting crimes at the Capitol and some additional resources you can use to create your letter here. Mix it up. It doesn’t need to be long.

Copy your comment to your legislator!
