This Doesn’t Start At The Steps Of The Capitol. It Ends Up There.

On Wednesday, elected officials incited a mob and ignored the will of the voters. Their malevolence did not originate in the U.S. Capitol. It ended up there.

It started in the states. 72 members of the U.S. House and Senate who voted to overturn the will of the voters were former state lawmakers.

I served with three of these lawmakers in the New York legislature. They entered public office with the help of narrow special interests. I’ve seen firsthand how, without attention and support, state legislatures can be the breeding ground for undemocratic extremism and white supremacy.

72 former state lawmakers voted to destroy our democracy. They never should have made it as far as Congress — but state legislatures propelled them to DC. If we don’t build the bench today to take us where we want to be tomorrow, our democracy will only continue to erode.

Together, we must stop the tide.

Onward,
