On Monday, the Great Conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn was an apt metaphor for Democrats in Washtenaw County. Our new County Committee and Executive Board have come together, the Standing Committees are already planning for the next two years through cross-committee meetings, and WCDP volunteers have set aside their ideological differences to continue building an organization that shines brightest when everyone works together.
Monday was also the winter solstice, marking the shortest day of the year, but we know for certain that the light will return, that the days will grow longer, and that spring will come. Empty platitudes about “hope” and “promise” do not offer that same kind of certainty. To emerge from one of the darkest years of our lives, our organization is committed to building stronger ties with communities all across Washtenaw County by partnering with local organizations, utilizing our resources in a more targeted way, and taking direct action when necessary. Yelling at the television or sending out angry tweets may be cathartic, but real change doesn’t happen without dedicated volunteers donating their time and skills to organizations like the WCDP.
For now, if you celebrate any holidays, celebrate as hard as you can (without overstepping CDC guidelines of course), and when you are celebrating, take a moment to recognize that we are all on this planet together, under the same sun. After the holidays are over, let’s get back to work making 2021 a year worth celebrating. Happy Holidays!
