Republican Absentee Voting Hypocrisy
Dirk Mayhew and Ericka Terry
In February, Republican Majority Leader for Michigan Senate Mike Shirkey called efforts to encourage absentee voting in light of the COVID pandemic a “dangerous precedent.” Shirkey has voted absentee the last five times he voted and hasn’t voted at the polls since March of 2016.

In Case You Missed It
Over the past few months, there have been a number of venues featuring the Washtenaw County Prosecutor candidates Hugo Mack, Eli Savat, and Arianne Slay. (Click on their names to visit their campaign websites.) If you are still undecided, here are two forums that were held last month covering a wide range of topics and issues:
- Western Washtenaw Dems Forum (July 17)
- Her World Initiative Forum (July 20)
For the Ann Arbor City Council races, you will find videos of candidate forums hosted by the Ann Arbor Democratic Party on their Facebook page and an additional live forum for Wards 3 and 4, hosted by Ward 3-4 Issues and Action at County Farm Park, also on Facebook.
Endorsement Meeting Voting Requirement
Last week, we sent out a notice about the WCDP’s Endorsement Meeting taking place on Tuesday, August 11. (Read it here.) This is a final reminder that you must be a member of the Michigan Democratic Party before July 11 in order to vote on endorsements. (If you are a Precinct Delegate, this requirement is waived, but you must be a member on the day of the meeting.) To check your status, email membership@washtenawdems.org. You can join the MDP (or renew your membership) online at michigandems.com/join.
