Florida Democratic Party Launches Website to Hold Buchanan Accountable for Broken Promises

Tallahassee, FL – Today, the Florida Democratic Party launched Broken Promises Buchanan, a website to showcase Buchanan’s history of breaking promises to his constituents. The website will be frequently updated with videos that focus on each of Buchanan’s broken promises.

“Vern Buchanan has a clear record of saying one thing here in Florida in election years and doing the opposite in Washington when he thinks voters aren’t looking,” said Florida Democratic Party Executive Director, Juan Peñalosa. “Voters should know the truth about what he really stands for and the Broken Promises Buchanan website will help make sure that they do.”

The first video, also released today, shows Buchanan breaking his promise on pre-existing conditions. In an August 20, 2009 Town Hall, Buchanan said he supported protecting people with pre-existing conditions in the following exchange:

Constituent: Is there anything that you can offer that will solve this problem, that will allow me to get health care, even though I’ve had a past history, I have a pre-existing condition?

Buchanan: We need to be able to deal with that, what’s available and affordable for you regardless of pre-existing conditions. We’ve gotta work through that. That’s an American right in my mind. So on that basis, I’m with you.

Buchanan however voted three times to repeal protections for people with pre-existing conditions in 20112012, and 2015.

Florida Democrats believe in effective and efficient government that prioritizes quality education, affordable health care, and an economy in which anyone who works hard can succeed.

Most importantly, we believe that we are stronger together. We believe the fundamental American promise — that you can go as far as your own hard work will take you — should shine brightest in Florida.

That is why we champion the middle class and cherish the principle that all Floridians should have the opportunity to work hard and succeed. That is why we will never stop fighting for better public schools, because education is the surest path to a better life for millions.

From standing for affordable health care and better schools to fighting for civil rights and access to the ballot box, Florida Democrats are leading every day to move our state forward.
