On Monday, Democrats in the PA House of Representatives took over the chamber, demanding action on over a dozen police reform bills that have been completely stalled by Republicans in control.
We say loudly and unequivocally that Black Lives Matter. We are outraged by the recent killings of Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and George Floyd and others. We grieve for them and mourn with their families.
We recognize that these are not isolated incidents of violence. Police brutality is tragically all too common in communities, and it is our moral obligation to act. It is long past time that we confront and dismantle the systems of oppression that have plagued our country since its founding.
People across the nation are taking to the streets, marching, and raising their voices to call out this moment and to demand change. This extraordinary mass mobilization shines a light on injustice, and the world is watching and listening.
We believe that electoral work, particularly at the state and local levels, is a crucial component in bringing about the change we need to see. Voting is an opportunity to place people in positions of power who will advance anti-racist policies to stop the violence and injustices experienced by Black and Brown people. Once elected, these lawmakers hold the power to take legislative action – or not.
We will work tirelessly to support and elect candidates who will enact reforms and move our commonwealth and country toward justice. While elections have never been more important, we recognize that the fight for racial justice is multi-dimensional. We know that we as individuals have work to do.
As allies, we are committed to listening and learning, to following Black leaders, to amplifying Black voices, to protesting and raising our voices in solidarity, and to donating to organizations fighting against racism and working to uplift Black communities.
We invite you to explore this list of anti-racism resources to learn more and to find ways you can help.
May this moment produce profound and lasting change.
We stand with you in this fight,
The Turn PA Blue Team
