Online General Meeting tonight! – Indivisible Yolo

Hello Indivisibles,

Don’t forget- our General Meetings are continuing, online. Our next meeting is TONIGHT, May 25th from 7:00-8:30pm. You can join from this link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/87097287493?pwd=bi9xSVBxMVMwd3laN1RwOFk0U3JLdz09. All are welcome as we talk about Indivisible Yolo’s current actions and opportunities for activism.

As usual, this week we have call scripts on current issues. For our Senators, we’re continuing to ask them to support the coronavirus relief bill that the House just passed- without watering it down! We know that Republicans are trying to reduce the benefits in this bill and to add provisions exempting companies from liability if they send workers back into unsafe conditions. We don’t want that to happen!

For our call to Rep. Garamendi, there’s a different issue that’s been slipping under the radar during the COVID crisis. The House is expected to vote THIS WEEK on an amendment to the Patriot Act that would protect Americans from warrantless surveillance of internet searches and web browsing. The Senate failed to pass these protections by just one vote due to some absent members, so now it’s up to the House (and to us, to tell our Representative we care about internet privacy rights).

Below, you can find example call scripts to ask Rep. Garamendi to support the Lofgren-Davidson amendment and to ask Sen. Harris and Feinstein to strongly support the HEROES bill.

Want some company making your calls to representatives? Join our Virtual Action Coffee Zoom meeting Monday morning at 10 am: https://zoom.us/j/721847201.

We hope to see you at our General Meeting online tonight. And as always, you can find up-to-date events on our calendar at https://indivisibleyolo.org/calendar/.

Take care, everyone!

Tell our Senators to pass the HEROES Act without watering it down:

Sample Call Script for Sen. Harris and Feinstein:
Hello, my name is [YOUR NAME] and I am a constituent from [CITY/STATE]. I’m calling Senator Harris/Feinstein to urge her to do everything possible to ensure that the HEROES Act is considered and passed in the Senate without being watered down. Please fight to include all of the provisions, and to improve it by adding regular relief payments instead of a one-time tax credit; by making sure that businesses aren’t shielded from liability when they put workers at risk; and by strengthening oversight and whistleblower protections.

Tell Rep. Garamendi to support internet privacy rights:

Sample script for Rep. Garamendi:
Hello, my name is [YOUR NAME] and I am a constituent from [CITY/ZIP CODE]. I’m calling because I’d like Rep. Garamendi to support internet privacy rights. For years, the government has abused its surveillance powers to spy on journalists, racial justice activists, and hundreds of millions of people just like me. There’s nothing patriotic about that. I urge you to support the Lofgren-Davidson amendment to the PATRIOT Act reauthorization bill. Don’t let the government access my Internet activity without a warrant. Save Internet privacy.
