COLUMBUS — Donald Trump keeps coming to Ohio, and when he’s here, he always makes a lot of wild claims and promises.
And then Trump breaks those promises.
As one former worker at the now-shuttered General Motors factory in Lordstown put it: “He lied. He told everybody it’s all coming back. It’s not. It’s harder and harder to find a job. ”
Ahead of Trump’s visit to the Buckeye State tomorrow, here is a list of the top five broken promises he has made to Ohioans:
Trump’s broken promise on China and Mexico Columbus, November 2015 “We’re going to take back our jobs from China and Mexico … ”** In 2018, GM announced it was bringing back the Chevrolet Blazer. Instead of building the SUV in America, GM is producing it in Mexico . ** Trump toured an Apple plant in Texas and bragged that the factory had opened on his watch. It didn’t . It opened in 2013 — under President Barack Obama — and despite a massive windfall from Trump’s tax bill, Apple still manufactures iPhones overseas, mainly in China. Trump’s broken promise on health care Akron, August 2016 “We are going to repeal and replace Obamacare, saving another 2 million jobs over the next decade alone .”** The Ohio Hospital Association said that “fully 25 percent of our hospitals in Ohio would be at risk of closure ” if Trump repealed the Affordable Care Act and ended the Medicaid expansion. **The Economic Policy Institute estimated Ohio could lose out on more than 81,000 jobs because of Trump’s attacks on the Affordable Care Act. Trump’s broken promise on manufacturing Toledo, September 2016 “New factories will come rushing onto our shores … ”** Trump’s tax scam actually encourages corporations to outsource jobs . ** GM got a huge windfall on their federal income taxes , while they were laying off thousands of workers across North America and shuttering factories including their plant in Lordstown . ** Manufacturing has fallen to its lowest level since 2009 . ** The Federal Reserve found that Trump’s disastrous trade policies have resulted in manufacturing job losses . Trump’s broken promise on student debt Columbus, October 2016 “If borrowers work hard and make their full payments for 15 years, we’ll let them get on with their lives .”** The Trump administration has proposed eliminating the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program . ** Trump’s Education Department has turned down nearly everyone who applied for relief through a temporary expansion of the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program . ** Trump’s student loan proposal would raise borrowers’ monthly payments . Trump’s broken promise on jobs Youngstown, July 2017 “Those jobs [that] have left Ohio, they’re coming back. They’re all coming back. Don’t move, don’t sell your house .”** Ohio has lost more than 4,000 jobs since January 2019 . **2019 will likely be the first year since 2009 — the height of the Great Recession — in which Ohio lost jobs .
