What’s the difference between Poll Worker & Poll Watcher?
Nonpartisan, Paid (Clerks, Judges, Inspectors, Checker, Precinct Worker)
Partisan, Volunteer (Observers, Monitors, Challengers)
To Be a Poll Worker You must be 18+, registered to vote, a resident of the county and state for the 30+ days prior to election, complete required training. You must not have been convicted of a felony or be running as a candidate for the election in which you are working. $160+ Contact your County Board of Elections to sign up.
HOW POLL WORKERS ARE CHOSEN:
On September 15 of each year, county boards appoint, by majority vote, 4 county residents to each election precinct as precinct election officials. Not more than 1/2 of precinct election officials in a precinct may be from same political party, and voting location manager will be chosen from the dominant political party in the precinct. “Additional officials” must be divided equally between the 2 major parties.

At any primary, special, or general election, any political party supporting candidates to be voted upon at such election and any group of five or more candidates may appoint to the board of elections or to any of the precincts in the county or city one person, a qualified elector, who shall serve as observer for such party or such candidates during the casting of the ballots and during the counting of the ballots; provided that separate observers may be appointed to serve during the casting and during the counting of the ballots.
Who is Authorized to Challenge a Voter’s Eligibility on Election Day?
Any person offering to vote may be challenged at the polling place by any precinct election official.
