What’s the difference between Poll Worker & Poll Watcher?

Poll Worker:
Nonpartisan, Paid (Clerks, Judges, Inspectors, Checker, Precinct Worker)

Poll Watcher:
Partisan, Volunteer (Observers, Monitors, Challengers)


ALASKA

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

To be a Poll Worker, you must be registered to vote in Alaska, be 18+ years old (except students 16 or older may work at the polls if they are enrolled in high school), be a resident of the precinct 30+ days prior to the election, must state your party affiliation. $9.50/hour. To sign up, contact your local board of elections. 

HOW POLL WORKERS ARE CHOSEN:

On or before April 15 in each regular election year, a party district or state committee of each political party may nominate 2 candidates for each precinct election board. An election supervisor shall appoint 1 nominee of the Governor’s political party of which & 1 nominee of the party that received the 2nd largest number of votes statewide in preceding gubernatorial election. If nominations are not provided then the election supervisor may appoint any qualified individual registered to vote.

POLL WATCHER INFO

Poll watchers are appointed by: the precinct party committee where an organized precinct committee exists; the district party committee where no organized precinct committee exists; the state party chair where no precinct or district committee exists; candidates not representing a political party; organizations or organized groups that sponsor oppose an initiative, referendum or recall. A watcher must be a United States citizen. 

Who is Authorized to Challenge a Voter’s Eligibility on Election Day?

Every election official shall question, and every watcher and any other person qualified to vote in the precinct may question, a person attempting to vote if the questioner has good reason to suspect that the questioned person is not qualified.
