Ways we can help get out the vote

- DON’T LET THIS FAMILY SEPARATION DOCUMENTARY BE SILENCED
For all the conservative complaints about the “liberal media,” the liberal standard bearer cable news channel has allegedly delayed the broadcast of a major documentary to avoid upsetting Trump. MSNBC has acquired “Separated,” Academy Award-winning director Errol Morris’ project on the Trump Administration’s family separation policy. But in the midst of an election cycle dominated by Trump’s anti-immigrant extremism they will not air it until December 7th. Morris suggested from the beginning this decision was driven by political considerations, and media journalist Oliver Darcy is now reporting that NBC chose to push back the airing in hopes Trump will agree to a presidential debate on their network. Given Trump’s proposal for mass deportation will bring this sort of tragedy to countless more families, this is exactly the perspective news channels should be providing to their viewers as they make their final decisions. Let’s reach out to the network and urge them to air this documentary while the American public still has a say on whether the perpetrator of these wrongs will take power again. They can be reached by email at MSNBCTVinfo@nbcuni.com. We can also try NBC News President of Editorial Rebecca Blumenstein at rebecca.blumenstein@nbcuni.com.
- PHONE BANKING FOR INTROVERTS TUESDAY
The Center for Common Ground has found that talking to a voter increases the likelihood that they will vote by 47%, and that voters who receive a voicemail from CCG are 16% more likely to vote. For those of us who are hesitant to make phone calls to strangers, CCG has created an event called Phone Banking for Introverts. It takes place virtually on Tuesday, Oct 15th at 6PM ET. If we think that phone banking is out of our comfort zone but we still feel we’d like to try it, let’s sign up for this supportive learning opportunity!
- A JUST FEDERAL JUDICIARY NEEDS A DEMOCRATIC SENATE
In May, the Senate confirmed President Biden’s 200th federal judge. His picks are historic: more non-white judges installed than any president in history, and the majority are female. If we want to continue building a federal judiciary that looks like the American people, we need to hold the Senate. Here’s one place to start: Grandmothers for a Brighter Future is sending postcards to Democratic and Independent women in Ohio to get the vote out for Senator Sherrod Brown who is polling as a toss-up against a Republican challenger. We can fill out this order form and the Grandmothers will email us our postcard kits. And we can find volunteer opportunities for the full list of Senate seats we can hold or play offense on here:- ARIZONA (open seat, Ruben Gallego) with the state party
- FLORIDA (challenger Debbie Mucarsel-Powell) with Debbie for Florida
- MARYLAND (open seat, Angela Alsobrooks) with Maryland Victory
- MICHIGAN (open seat, Elissa Slotkin) with Michigan Victory
- MISSOURI (challenger Lucas Kunce) with Missouri Victory and the Kunce campaign
- MONTANA (incumbent Jon Tester) with Big Sky Victory
- NEBRASKA (challenger Dan Osborn, an independent labor activist running against a Republican in a race without a Democratic nominee) with Osborn for Senate
- OHIO (incumbent Sherrod Brown) with Organizing for Ohio
- PENNSYLVANIA (incumbent Bob Casey) with the state party
- TEXAS (challenger Colin Allred) with Texas Offense
- WISCONSIN (incumbent Tammy Baldwin) with the Wisconsin Dems
- MAKING THE CASE AGAINST COMSTOCK – BRIEFING TODAY
We still have a little time left if we want to write a letter to the editor explaining how Trump can ban abortion with laws already on the books. And if we’re looking for more information and more ways to make the case, the Cancel Comstock Coalition and the Progressive Caucus Action Fund are holding a virtual briefing on this zombie law TODAY at 1pm ET. We’ll hear from Rep. Becca Balint (D-VT), author of the Stop Comstock Act, and experts in law, policy, and public health on the Comstock Act’s potential impact on our health and rights, anti-abortion extremists’ attempt to resurrect this law and weaponize it against us, and what we can do about it. We can sign up here.(h/t Jessica Craven)
- GET HELP WITH VOTER ID – AFTER DISASTER AND ALWAYS
With so much to deal with after a traumatic event like a hurricane, fire or other natural disaster, replacing ID documents can seem like an overwhelming task. Still, we need them for so many things – including, in many states, voting. VoteRiders understands how stressful this task can be and is here to assist, with experts, including pro bono lawyers, ready to help us get the IDs we need. They also have information and who to contact and what to do to get back our missing ID documents. We call or text VoterRiders Helpline at 866-432-8683 or reach out through their website to help replace our missing IDs. If we have friends who also need this help, we can share this link with them as well. This is also a good moment to remember the millions of Americans who have been silenced at the ballot box because they lacked basic photo ID in the first place, and consider a donation to the Project ID/Spread The Vote team to help them get the necessary documents and make their voices heard.
- STATE-SPECIFIC ACTIONS
- WA – VOLUNTEER FOR KIM SCHRIERThe campaign of Representative Kim Schrier is calling for volunteers! Congresswoman Schrier has represented Washington’s 8th District since 2019. Indivisible.com is organizing phone banks in Florida on Tuesday October 15; in Montana and Missouri on Thursday October 17; and in Ohio on Monday October 21. These are not only to encourage votes for Harris/ Walz; they are also targeting key Senate races by asking voters to support Debbie Muscarel-Powell in Florida, Jon Tester in Montana, and Sherrod Brown in Ohio, as well as the reproductive rights initiative in Missouri. Let’s sign up for as many as we’re able to do.
- VOTO LATINO
Voto Latino says, “Our collective power lies in our ability to make our voices heard. The single most effective way to have your voice heard is by voting. Voting is how we hold elected officials accountable for the decisions they are making on our behalf. Latines are the fastest growing demographic in the United States, and with that growth comes the power to impact the decisions being made at all levels of government. If we vote, organize, and fight for the things we believe in, with our numbers, we can effect real change.” Click here to register to vote and find ways to get involved, here.
- LIST OF SWING STATE ACTIONS OFFERS MANY OPTIONS
With the election still too close to call and time getting shorter and shorter, we know the focus is on the key swing states, but what specifically can we do to ensure a Harris/ Walz victory on Election Day? Climate activist Dave Margulius has put together a very thorough state by state list of actions to help us decide what we will do. This concise, yet highly informative document includes a brief analysis of key issues and areas for each swing state and then a comprehensive list of actions for us to choose from, ones both virtual and in person, including transportation info when available, with up to date links to find out more and sign up. We can find out more about actions to take in the swing states, sign up for the ones we want, and then share this information with our friends here.
- GROUP ZOOM CALLS FOR HARRIS
Tuesday, October 158:00 PM ET – Scare up the Vote with Stephen King. Let’s sign up here. (Was in 10/9 this is just for format purposes)

- EARLY VOTING START DATES IN EVERY STATE
By now, readers of Rogan’s List have learned about the importance of voting early for Harris / Walz and Democrats down-ballot. But when does early voting start in our state? Here are some great tools with the answers: Early Voting Start Dates and Early Voting by State (with links to each state’s official voting rules and resources) and this Early Voting Availability map. If we plan to vote early, let’s check these resources and get to it! (h/t The Grassroots Connector) - MICHIGAN IS MAIZE AND BLUE
We all know what the stakes are in Michigan. Whoever takes the state’s 15 electoral votes has an easy path to the White House, and there’s an open Senate seat that Democrats absolutely need to hold. The race seems to be tightening, and our Senate nominee Rep. Elissa Slotkin is ringing the alarm bell. Let’s not leave any votes on the table! Those of us out of state can sign up for virtual phonebanks on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, and the Michiganders can find opportunities to door-knock and poll observer training near us here.
- PREPARING TO PROTECT THE KEYSTONE VOTE
The Trump team has made it increasingly clear that while we’re doing GOTV, their ground game is going to be suppressing votes wherever possible. So along with turning out Democrats, we’re going to need to prepare to ensure their votes count. Voter protection efforts are well underway, and we can take part! Let’s sign up for ballot cure and voter protection phonebanks in the next few days in Pennsylvania.
- ARE WE BOSSES? LET’S HELP OUR EMPLOYEES VOTE
According to this Harvard Business School article, encouraging civic participation is good for business and for democracy. TriNet, a human resources consulting firm, has great tips for businesses to help their employees to vote. If we employ people, let’s read TriNet’s article “Encouraging Employees to Get Out and Vote,” and let’s put those and any new ideas we come up with into action!
- STUDENTS TO THE POLLS
Turning out young voters will be a central part of a Harris victory – the Vice President holds a 23-point lead among registered voters under 30. Here are some resources we can promote and actions we can take to get college kids to rock the vote:- Swing the Vote’s mission is registering college students in swing states: “We provide college-specific instructions and 1:1 voting mentors to make sure students have the support they need.” If we’re college students, we can fill out this voting info request form and get help registering to vote. The rest of us can share this link and spread the word!
- Voter IDs laws target students, too, with a tangled web of rules on what counts as acceptable identification. VoteRiders has a guide set up for which states let them use their student IDs and what the options are if they don’t. Let’s consult and share this guide.
- Many students are spending this semester at an exchange program at a university abroad, and we need their votes too! Vote From Abroad has info on how they get their absentee ballots that we can share here.
- The Department of Education allows students to use federal work study grants for civic activities like voter registration. And the Higher Education Act requires that colleges spend seven percent of their funding on civic activities. Let’s reach out to colleges and universities that we have connections to and urge them to involve their work-study students in voter registration. The group Students Learn Students Vote Coalition has put together a toolkit that can be used as a resource for this effort.
- This report from Tufts University “highlights ways to increase youth voting and address stubborn inequities in participation: from electoral laws that make it easier to register, to engaging youth based on the issues they care about. But achieving drastic improvements and eliminating, not just addressing, inequities requires major shifts in how we approach the task of ensuring all youth are informed, motivated, and ready to vote.” They give us “24 key recommendations from the report that individuals, communities, and institutions can begin working on now —starting with one recommendation to help you assess how you can have an impact.” Let’s check out their suggestions here and start putting them to work.
FREE BUS RIDES TO PA FROM NEW YORK TO GET OUT THE VOTE
New Yorkers can play a vital role in winning this election by campaigning in nearby swing state, Pennsylvania. New York for Harris is joining the official Harris/Walz campaign to offer free bus trips to get out the vote in Pennsylvania. Buses have already begun launching at 9am on Saturdays from Harlem, The Bronx, Brooklyn, and Queens and will keep scaling up each weekend with plans to send 70 buses from across NYS into PA by Election Day. We can find out more about the free buses to PA and sign up here. Groups of 20 or more interested in filling a bus from a preferred location can also fill out a request form here, too.
