Project 2025’s war on women mirrors Handmaid’s Tale

“Handmaid’s Tale takes place in Gilead, a futuristic world in which women’s rights are a thing of the past. Cruel men in power send young and fertile women — the “handmaids” — to affluent families, where they are forced to help couples procreate via sexual servitude.” — Hollywood Reporter

Deny women their freedoms

Control of women and children has been a feature of every repressive political regime on the planet and throughout history.

“The Handmaid’s Tale describes a toxic world in which misogyny and environmental degradation has turned the US into a totalitarian theocracy. The fictional republic of Gilead has enforced a system of gender-based violence, enslaving the few women capable of bearing children to serve as “handmaidens” to the ruling class. In Gilead, lesbians and “gender traitors” are hanged. Citizens are tracked, watched, and spied upon. Women are not permitted to read. Children are torn from the arms of their birth mothers. There are deadly skirmishes at the borders, as refugees attempt to flee.” — Margaret Atwood in The Conversation

Sentenced to jail for an abortion

“Mike Pence signed a law in 2016 prohibiting women from obtaining an abortion because of the race, gender, or disability of the fetus, making Indiana only the second state in the nation to do this. This law would also hold doctors legally liable for wrongful death if it was found they had performed an abortion motivated by one or more of the prohibited reasons.” — Salon

“The state of Indiana sentenced 33-year-old Purvi Patel to 20 years in prison on charges of feticide — an act that causes the death of a fetus — and neglect of a dependent. She received a 30-year-sentence on the felony neglect charge, 10 of which were suspended. A six-year sentence for feticide will be served concurrently. Patel is the first woman in the U.S. to be charged, convicted and sentenced on a feticide charge. Reproductive rights activists are outraged.“What this conviction means is that anti-abortion laws will be used to punish pregnant woman,” says Lynn Paltrow, Executive Director for National Advocates for Pregnant Women.” — NBC News

Rewarding abortion vigilantes

“Terrifying Texas Abortion Law Mobilizes ‘Vigilantes’ To Shred Rights. An attorney for the Department of Justice on Friday slammed the “terrifying” and “subversive” new Texas abortion law for empowering “vigilante bounty hunters” to shred women’s constitutional rights. The law bars abortions after six weeks, before most women even know they’re pregnant. Enforcement is through citizen vigilantes, who can win $10,000 in civil damages if they successfully sue anyone who “aids and abets” an abortion — from a doctor to a driver.” — HuffPo

Louisiana Abortion Bill Could See Women Charged With Murder

Under the new proposed House Bill 813, abortion will be considered as homicide from fertilization and conception. The legislators’ professed aim is to “ensure the right to life and equal protection of the laws to all unborn children from the moment of fertilization…” Any abortion would then see both the doctor or those assisting and the person who had the abortion charged with murder. — Newsweek

Alabama charges pregnant women who was victim of shooting with murder

A previously 5‑months pregnant Alabama woman whose fetus died after she was shot in the stomach during a fight was charged with manslaughter on Wednesday, while the woman accused of shooting her has been freed.

Lynn Paltrow, executive director of National Advocates for Pregnant Women said Alabama currently leads the nation in charging women for crimes related to their pregnancies. She said hundreds have been prosecuted for running afoul of the state’s “chemical endangerment of a child” statute by exposing their embryo or fetus to controlled substances. But this is the first time she’s heard of a pregnant woman being charged after getting shot. “This takes us to a new level of inhumanity and illegality towards pregnant women,” Paltrow said. “I can’t think of any other circumstance where a person who themselves is a victim of a crime is treated as the criminal.“ — Fox 35 News

Ted Cruz defends ban against sale of sex toys

As solicitor general, Cruz’s office had argued in case that using sex toys was akin to ‘hiring a prostitute’ and masturbation was not covered by the right to privacy.” — The Guardian
