Michigan Primary Election: Tuesday, August 6, 2024

Note from the editors: We at Protectors of Equality in Government (PEG) want to tell you about meaningful ways to stay informed and active. We also want to keep things brief and engaging! Therefore, you’ll now see a traditional, in-depth newsletter during the first week of the month, followed by shorter “Ideas for Action” editions the rest of the month. Let us know what you think!

Thank you, Joe Biden, for over 50 years of service!

In his farewell speech to the nation on Wednesday night, President Biden told us it had been the privilege of his lifetime to serve our country as president. He touted his accomplishments—the creation of sixteen million new jobs, the lowering of drug prices, the strengthening of NATO, etc—but that his own ambition could not stand in the way of saving democracy. It was, he conceded, time to unite the nation by passing the torch to younger voices. He extolled our democracy, thereby returning responsibility for it to the American people.
As he put it, “this sacred task of perfecting our union is not about me. It’s about you, your families, your futures. It’s about we the people.” Two more times, he invoked the word “sacred” to describe our democracy. Despite his many achievements as president, Biden ultimately will be remembered for the gracious and wise way he relinquished power.

August 6 is the Michigan Primary Election!

by Guest Contributor, Jeff Halter, Democratic Precinct Delegate

For this election, you must choose a Partisan Section: Democrat or Republican. You can’t mix and match!

A few items to help with voting:

Absentee Ballot (AB) If requested you should have received by now. Voting options:

  1. Mail the AB back, which you may have already done. My Michigan Dem colleagues advise against mailing back from now on as it’s a bit too close to August 6. If not received by August 6, the AB will not be counted.
  2. Return the AB to a designated Drop Box by August 6. For Drop Box locations you can use this web site to find your closest location: bit.ly/3Yff1CW
  3. Use the Early Voting or Election Day options per below.

 Early Voting (New this year!)

  1. Starts Saturday, July 27, and runs through Sunday, August 4. There are 4 locations for Ann Arbor City.
  2. The process is identical to traditional Election Day voting: show up, sign in, get ballot, vote, insert ballot into voting machine. Best to bring ID, but not required (if no ID you can sign a simple form stating you are who you say you are).
  3. If you still have your AB, you can bring it to an Early Voting site, sign in, and insert the AB into the voting machine so it will be counted as of then.
  4. If you lost your AB or want to change who you voted for, you can go to an Early Voting site, sign in, “spoil” the AB, get issued a new ballot, and vote.

Election Day

  1. As usual on Tuesday, Aug 6.
  2. Go to your usual Precinct location. Open 7am-8pm.
  3. If you still have your AB or lost it, you can proceed as described above for Early Voting items 3 and
  4. If someone you know is having a problem with voting, they can call the Voter Protection Hotline to get assistance: 833-MI-VOTES or 833-648-6837. If the line is busy or after hours, they should leave a message and there will be a call back within 24 hours.
