Democracy vs. dictatorship

Indivisible National is sounding the alarm on the latest SCOTUS decision that tears down the rule of law:

“JUST THREE DAYS BEFORE Independence Day, those justices voted to restore the monarchy — or at the very least monarchy lite — with their ruling in Trump’s immunity case. Don’t take our word for it:

‘The president is now a king,’ Justice Sotomayor wrote in her dissent. ‘Above the law.’

The ruling is incompatible with the continued functioning of our democracy as we know it. This court, as currently constituted, is incompatible with the continued functioning of our democracy as we know it. And if the MAGA justices get their way and Trump wins a second term wielding the absolute immunity the Supreme Court has granted him — our democratic experiment is in deep, deep trouble.

It’s time to treat the Supreme Court’s corruption and lawless partisan activism like the five alarm fire it is. We need Democrats talking about this, constantly. We need Congress holding hearings to help the public understand the threat. We need to organize to expand the court and to elect members of Congress with the guts to do it. And we need to make sure voters understand the stakes of this election: democracy vs. dictatorship.”

“The only way that we can stop SCOTUS before they act further to snuff out our rights, our bodily autonomy, and our freedom is to fight like hell to retake our Democratic trifecta and for Democrats to stiffen their spines, reform the filibuster, pass democracy reform, codify reproductive rights, and expand the Court to unrig the MAGA supermajority disguised in judicial robes.”

It’s time to get to work! We’ve got canvassing, voter registration, voter information, and phone banking events set up so we can do the work to make sure democracy wins.

Monday Marathon to Update Blue Voter Guide

We’re doing our part to help elect Democrats up and down the ballot via our VEPE team. They’re hosting a critically important Blue Voter Guide Marathon Work Session Monday 6-8 PM at the Mary Stephens Library in Davis, July 8.

The Blue Voter Guide provides an essential antidote to voter confusion and fatigue. And there is no greater source of confusion and consternation for Californians than the numerous complex propositions on our ballot!

Join fellow activists in an internet research marathon to locate and identify progressive organizations endorsing California propositions. Research results will be posted on the Blue Voter Guide to aid voters in November. Knowing who endorsed a proposition goes a long way to relieving voter angst when filling out the ballot.

Indivisible Yolo Watch Party for “Active Listening”

Join your local activists and come to a Watch Party in Davis to see popular trainer Kathi Walsh teach us the vital skill of LISTENING. The most powerful tool we have to make a strong connection with voters is to listen to them! We can help them feel heard and identify the issues that are most important to them. These skills will help us talk to voters when we are canvassing or phone banking, both essential tools for winning elections. We’ll have time after the training to discuss what we heard and get to know each other.

Tell our Members of Congress: No to Netanyahu!

Indivisible National’s call to action in support of a ceasefire:

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has accepted an invitation to give a joint address to Congress, and it’s expected this will happen sometime before the August recess.

But Netanyahu should not be given this platform. He has used the war in Gaza for his own political gain, insisting on a prolonged military response that has led to the suffering and deaths of tens of thousands of innocent civilians and has not prioritized reuniting hostages with their families. Even President Biden acknowledges it is “completely reasonable” to understand Netanyahu’s motivation for continuing the war as political.

Netanyahu brags about meddling in US politics, and has used past appearances before Congress to undermine President Obama and sabotage other critical peace processes. We should expect he’d do the same now. President Biden has laid out a peace deal and is encouraging all parties at the table to take it – the US must use more leverage to close that deal, not give Netanyahu a platform to play partisan politics.

Members of Congress must send a clear message that they do not support the continued bloodshed and slaughter of innocent Palestinians or Netanyahu’s disregard for returning hostages to their loved ones.

Please call or email your Senators and Representative:

Read Indivisible.org’s statements on the Israel/Palestine crisis
Sen. Padilla Sacramento phone: 916-448-2787
Sen. Padilla web contact form
Sen. Butler Washington D.C. phone: 202-224-3841
Sen. Butler web contact form

Contact both Senators, but only your own Representative (for Yolo County, this will be either Rep. Mike Thompson or Rep. Doris Matsui).

Rep. Thompson Woodland phone: 530-753-5301
Rep. Thompson web contact form
Rep. Matsui Sacramento phone: (916) 498-5600
Rep. Matsui web contact form

Example call/email script (your own words are best!)

I am outraged that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is being given the opportunity to address Congress.

Netanyahu is corrupt and continuing the war in Gaza for his own political gain. His relentless bombings of hospitals and refugee camps have killed tens of thousands of innocent Palestinians. He has made it clear that he is more interested in his far-right agenda than in bringing an end to the brutal war and securing the release of the hostages. Having him speak to Congress would undermine efforts by President Biden and the international community to end the war and get desperately needed aid to the people of Gaza.

I expect them to say No to Netanyahu and skip his address. They must send a clear message to him that they do not support his prolonged war or the bloodshed it has caused and take a stand in support of a ceasefire. Please use all leverage to secure a ceasefire, including withholding arms shipments to Israel.

Tell Our Members of Congress: Expand the Supreme Court

The Supreme Court, which is stacked with MAGA justices hand-picked by Republicans and dark money groups, is completely out of control.

It’s clear that these MAGA justices cannot be fair and impartial arbiters of the law. In fact, our democracy is in danger the longer that they have the majority on the bench. The only way to save our constitutional and civil rights is to expand the Supreme Court by passing the Judiciary Act of 2023.

Every single issue we care about is at risk with this conservative MAGA majority in power at the Court. That’s why we must act now to unrig our courts before it’s too late.

The Judiciary Act provides the most urgent solution to a Supreme Court that has been captured by conservative extremists. This bill would add four additional justices to the bench to match the number of circuit courts, and undo the decades of conservative court-packing that got us into this mess. The Constitution does not require a set number of Supreme Court justices and the number has fluctuated over the years.

We must expand the Supreme Court.

Example call/email script (your own words are best!)

I’m a constituent and I am outraged at the illegitimate Supreme Court’s ruling that the president has the powers of a king. No one should be above the law. I need to see the [Representative/Senator] speaking about this and coming out in support of the Judiciary Act of 2023. We need to expand the court and undo the decades of conservative court-packing that got us into this mess. Nothing else will restore the rule of law and the legitimacy of our Supreme Court. Does the [Senator/Representative] support expanding the Court, and will [he/she] speak out against this illegitimate ruling?

Since the January 2017, more than 4,000 San Franciscans have united as Indivisible SF to march in the Women's Marches, protest the Muslim Ban, meet regularly with our Members of Congress, and make thousands of phone calls to their offices to pressure them to do everything in their power to counter the policies and politics of Trumpism. There is much work in progress and many actions to come.

Members of Indivisible SF are defined by our action and find solidarity in our shared opposition to Trump and Trumpism. Each of us explicitly reserves our individual stances on specific issues for other forums as we believe resisting Trump is more important than any single issue. We adhere to a Code of Conduct that welcomes and respects everybody.

Members of Indivisible SF come from all kinds of backgrounds and political persuasions. Some of us are first-time activists and others have been at this for decades. We are citizens and non-citizens. Most importantly, we are all patriots that want the best for our country and are willing to work for it.
