May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a time when we focus on the challenges and solutions associated with mental health—a critical component of our overall wellbeing. This month serves as a reminder that mental health is essential and that support and resources are more accessible than ever, from the national level to our local communities.

At the national level, President Biden has prioritized substantial enhancements in mental health care as part of his broader commitment to social welfare and worker support. His administration emphasizes an inclusive economy where every American has access to strong mental health support systems, crucial in these times of recovery and growth.

In Michigan, Governor Gretchen Whitmer has led the charge in expanding access to mental health resources. The introduction of Senate Bill 714, allocating $565 million for mental health services, marks a historic investment in our state’s mental health infrastructure, spearheaded by her commitment to expanding Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinics.

Locally, in Oakland County, under Executive Dave Coulter’s guidance, we are making strides towards a more inclusive and accessible mental health environment. The upcoming opening of a 24/7 emergency mental health clinic in Pontiac is a testament to our dedication. This facility will be a cornerstone of community support, providing immediate care to those in crisis.

Additionally, our DEI initiatives are driving progress towards a community where everyone can thrive, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, disability, and more. We are advancing these goals through new DEI training courses and Employee Resource Groups, ensuring that all our efforts foster better mental health and well-being.

    •    Need a break? Check out our campus and county walking maps & trails or register for Fitness Unleashed.

Upcoming Events:

    •    OakFit Lunch ‘n’ Learn (May 29, Noon – 1 p.m.): Meet with Nicole Papas, Wellness Coordinator, to learn about Walk Michigan and discover ways to incorporate more movement into your day. Register here.

As we observe Mental Health Awareness Month, let’s celebrate the layers of effort—from federal initiatives to local projects—that strengthen our community’s foundation. These efforts embody our shared values of compassion, inclusivity, and resilience.

Thank you for your continued support of these vital efforts. Your commitment helps sustain our momentum towards a healthier, more supportive community.
