Hi everyone! 

We need you to do an action TODAY! (Monday – 05/13) or/and TOMORROW (Tuesday – 05/14)! Making the calls will take about 5 minutes and it may save you money. It will definitely help those on fixed incomes and tell our legislators, regulators and greedy corporations that not only are we watching, but that we’ve had enough!

ACTIONS for DIY Democracy! Cap the utility tax! Then, make companies stop picking our pockets to fund climate change denial  

  • Question: Why is California no longer a nationwide leader for renewable energy? Why are we actually regressing, losing access to affordable solar power and over 17,000 jobs in that industry? 
  • Answer:  Our rapacious privately-owned utility companies (PG&E, SCE, SEG&E) have incredible power over their own regulators, the CA Public Utilities Commission (CPUC), along with too many of our legislators. These corporations also work hard on their greenwashing campaigns to lull us, “Matrix-like,” into compliance.
  • Why do they bother?: Despite the travesty of Citizens United, corporations are not yet able to simply appoint legislators. That’s still our job…for now. (See “Project 2025”) But by the time we get to vote again, a lot of mischief will have already taken place.
  • What should we do now?: The Indivisible CA Green Team and fellow activists have been lobbying tirelessly against utility company greed and corruption, but now they need our help. They need YOUR CALLS!
  • Seriously? Are calls effective?:YOUR CALLS helped Senator Becker’s solar bill (SB 1374 – restoring owners’ rights to credited for consuming their own solar energy) get passed in the Senate. Two weeks ago, they did not have the votes.
    • YOUR CALLS brought Assemblymember Jacqui Irwin’s AB-1999 bill to install a CAP on a utility tax back from the dead. It’s now at $24, limits increases to inflation, and sunsets after three years. 
    • YOUR CALLS are now needed to push it across the finish line. If this bill fails, there is no CAP, and the tax could eventually rise to the $92 PG&E originally asked for. 
    • YOUR CALLS are also needed to our state senators to get creative and resurrect SB938, which prevents these same utility companies from using our own money to lobby against renewable and affordable energy. (Watch this video – it’s jaw-dropping! https://youtu.be/LhIOCSz-VbY?si=uCjIASL8LsjZOBU3)
    • Don’t forget Newsom!: Make sure he knows that we are angry!

The 33rd Annual Juneteenth Celebration is the orignal Ventura County Juneteenth Celebration!

This event celebrates the 1865 historical Proclamation of Freedom from slavery in Texas. Vintage attire is welcomed and to celebrate this historic occasion, we are always excited to have The Buffalo Soldier Mounted Cavalry Unit in attendance and showcasing the American Soldiers of that era.

A FREE fun filled day for the entire family of all ages. The Juneteenth annual event will feature fantastic food, amazing merchandise and vocal, instrumental and dance performances by many of Ventura County’s top artists like the Ventura College Jazz Band, Sunday Morning Praise Band, vocal sounds by Sade Champagne. Project 2025 is the Heritage Foundation’s plan for a second Trump administration. We need to let everyone know what’s included in this nearly thousand-page document. For those who believe in a progressive, inclusive, tolerant, fair society, these plans are frightening.

Background: The U.S. Supreme Court issued its ruling on the Dobb’s case on June 24, 2022, taking away the constitutional right to abortion, abandoning almost 50 years of precedent, and paving the way for states to ban abortion. Women of the USA will take their stand, on June 24th, and in November.

DIY Democracy – EDUCATIONEvery month, Ventura County’s Swap Meet Justice volunteers fill out citizenship forms for applicants and supply them with study guides for the 100 questions they may be asked at their interview.
