Missouri Democratic Insider- May 14, 2024

6 mins read

This week, Governor Parson signed Republican State Representative Cody Smith’s HB2634, which will defund essential healthcare clinics that provide access to “contraceptive care, STI testing, cancer screenings, and wellness checks,” among other health services. This bill passed with every Republican state legislator voting in favor, including state Senator and Republican candidate for governor Bill Eigel. Zero Democrats supported this bill.

Missouri Republicans have consistently doubled- down on their war against reproductive and family planning freedom this legislative session, voting against allowing abortion exceptions in cases of rape or incest and against protecting contraceptives and IVF services. Instead of working to improve access to quality, affordable healthcare, Republicans in the state legislature have been working relentlessly to attack our rights and gut access to basic care.

ICYMI: GOP State Rep Cheri Toalson Reisch Argued That Today’s Children Are Lazy & Need To Get A Job While Speaking In Support Of Bill To Roll Back Child Labor Laws (WATCH)

Background:

On Tuesday, May 7th, the state legislature voted on Republican State Representative Dave Hinman‘s bill to loosen child labor protections by removing work permit requirements for 14 and 15-year-old children. Every Republican supported the bill. Zero Democrats supported the measure. Attacking hard-fought protections around child labor has been a national strategy driven by wealthy backers of GOP candidates, despite child labor violations having tripled in the last decade.Secretary of State & GOP Gubernatorial candidate Jay Ashcroft was recently caught publishing an op-ed written for him by a right-wing think tank funded by conservative billionaires that pushes for laws to deregulate child labor, stop Medicaid expansion, and slash food stamps, among other initiatives.

Guidance: Missouri Grassroots Voter Registration 2024

Voter Education

Providing an unregistered voter with the information they may not have previously had constitutes voter education. Missouri now offers eligible Missourians the option to register 100% online if they are using a touchscreen phone or tablet.

QR Codes & Links

Providing an unregistered voter with a link to or a QR code they can scan with their personal phone or tablet or they can scan with a provided touch screen device to complete their registration themselves does not constitute a solicitation and does not trigger a chain of custody issue with a voter registration application.

Language and Presentation

To ensure any voter registration effort remains compliant in the voter education lane, voter registration communications will be separated from any other program communications. This will be accomplished as simply as presenting a separate page to an unregistered voter after one learns the voter is unregistered, for example.

Suggested Language

“Did you know that you can register to vote online in seconds using a touch screen? Here is a Link/ QR Code if you’d like to register now.”
