Map of Republican racism starving HBCUs of funding

GOP lawmakers replace trustees at historically Black college in Tennessee

“Tennessee Governor Bill Lee and Republican politicians, who are predominantly White, are accused unfairly singling out Tennessee State University (an Historically Black Colleges And Universities).

The Tennessee State University (predominantly Black) has been underfunded by Tennessee by $2.1 billion between 1987 to 2022… The University of Tennessee (predominantly white) and the state’s other land grant university — did, in fact, get its full state funding each year.” — Washington Post excerpts

Racism in Black & White

“Some lawmakers expressed concerns that state leaders, who are predominantly White, are unfairly singling out Tennessee State. “I’ve seen many audits of many universities that look horrendous,” state Rep. Bo Mitchell (D‑Nashville) said after the House vote. “Have we ever, ever vacated an entire board of a university before? Have we ever done that?”

In a statement, Tennessee State officials said, “We believe this legislation will disrupt our students’ educational pursuits, harm the image of the University, and remove a Board that had achieved success in its enhanced governance of TSU.” The statement also said the school never mismanaged funds.” — Washington Post excerpts

Republicans stick dynamite in your bridge to a better future

“We have people who realize it takes a bridge sometimes to get where you’re trying to go,” Barry Barlow, a pastor and TSU grad said during a news conference after the vote. “But we have people in the Tennessee General Assembly who will take your bridge of promise and stick dynamite to it.” — AP

Center For Common Ground

The  Center for Common Ground  educates and empower voters of color in voter suppression states. It works in states where more than 20% of voters are people of color – Alabama, Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Texas.

Democracy works best when everyone is invited to participate in it.Unfortunately, there is a stark contrast in whose voices get prioritized in elections. At the Center for Common Ground our goal is to ensure every voter knows their voice and their votes matter. Center For Common Ground strive to mobilize ALL voters of color, both those who consistently participate in elections and those who have yet to exercise their right to vote.
