TONIGHT April 1 @ 6:30pm- Speak up against Facial Recognition Technology

From our friends at Yolo People Power comes this action item for our Davis members TONIGHT, April 1 @ 6:30pm, Davis City Hall Community Chambers (23 Russell Blvd):

In our continuous effort to protect the rights and privacy of our community, we find ourselves at a critical juncture. The Police Accountability Commission (PAC) is currently considering a recommendation to the City Council concerning the ban on Facial Recognition Technology (FRT) in Davis. Despite the overwhelming evidence against the use of FRT due to its biases against minority groups, we have learned that at least one influential member of the commission is opposed to this ban.

This is where we need your help.

Why It’s Critical Now:

The upcoming PAC meeting is a decisive moment for us to collectively voice our concerns and advocate for the prohibition of use of FRT by the City of Davis. The technology’s lack of reliability, especially its proven bias against people of color, women and gender non-conforming folks, presents a dangerous potential for misuse and wrongful identification, thereby causing greater harm than good. Moreover, the pervasive surveillance culture that FRT fosters encroaches upon our fundamental rights to privacy and freedom, creating a watched society rather than a safe one.

How You Can Make an Impact:

Attend the PAC Meeting: Your presence will demonstrate the strong community support for privacy rights and ethical policing. Show the commission that we stand united against FRT.

Speak Up During Public Comment: It’s crucial that the commission hears from a broad spectrum of voices. We urge you to participate in the public comment period to express:

  • Concern over FRT’s accuracy and its discriminatory impact on marginalized communities.
  • The potential for FRT to violate privacy rights and civil liberties.
  • The importance of the commission’s role in representing community interests and safeguarding against surveillance overreach.

Send the Commission an Email: If you cannot attend, please send an email to the commission at PAC@cityofdavis.org

The opposition within the commission underscores the necessity of our collective action. Now more than ever, your voice is essential in guiding our community towards a decision that upholds the values of privacy, equity, and justice.

Together, we can influence the outcome of this critical issue. Thank you for standing with us in this important moment.

Best regards,

Yolo People Power

I am a constituent and I am [calling/writing] today to ask [Sen. Padilla/Sen. Butler/Rep. Thompson/Rep. Matsui] to publicly call for a humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza. It’s heartbreaking to witness the loss of civilian life in Gaza and the West Bank stemming from the Israeli military’s campaign. Any humanitarian solution to this crisis starts with stopping the bombs. Achieving safety and security for Israelis and Palestinians will not be achieved through a continued campaign of collective punishment.

I am counting on you to publicly call for a humanitarian ceasefire and to use your position to push for an end to hostilities and to deliver urgently needed humanitarian assistance.
