URGENT – TESTIMONY NEEDED IN SUPPORT OF SB 2845 SD2

he House Judiciary Committee is holding a hearing this Friday, March 15, at 2 pm in Room 325 on SB2845 SD2, an important bill addressing ammunition safety.

Please submit testimony supporting this bill by Thursday, March 14 at 2pm.

SB 2845 SD2 AMMUNITION (IN SUPPORT)

(Note: The full title of this bill is “SB2845 SD2” but on the testimony page it shows as “SB2845”.  This is the same bill.)

SB 2845 SD2 prohibits persons under the age of 21 from purchasing or possessing ammunition (with exceptions such as hunting, target shooting, and members of the military or law enforcement).

Talking point:

A person must be 21 years old to buy or carry a firearm but there is no current restriction on purchase or possession of ammunition.  This bill corrects that deficiency and keeps ammunition out of the hands of minors with specific exceptions in controlled situations.

To submit testimony:

·       Click on this link to get onto the State Legislature website: Hawaiʻi State Legislature

·       Log into your account (or register for an account if you don’t have one)

·       On My Legislature page, click on the “Submit Testimony” button.

·       On the Submit Testimony page, on the left side, type in the number of the bill for which you are submitting testimony.  Enter the bill number with no spaces (for example, SB1234 or HB1234), then click “Continue”.

·       In the form, fill in required fields and indicate whether you support or oppose the bill and

·       whether you intend to submit only written testimony or also appear in person or by Zoom.

·       If you intend to provide a written statement, you have the option of uploading a file or writing directly in the box on the form.  Please start your statement with “IN SUPPORT” or ‘IN OPPOSITION”, then feel free to add your own comments.   Talking points have been provided above to use as a springboard if you wish.  If you do not wish to add comments, a simple “IN SUPPORT” OR ‘IN OPPOSITION” still counts.

·       Press submit when all fields are completed. You will see your completed form to review and edit if need be.  Check the box indicating you are aware your statement is public info.

·       Press submit again and it should bring you back to the first page where a green box will indicate your testimony has been successfully submitted.
