- THE DEATH OF LAKEN RILEY HAS BECOME A CAMPAIGN ISSUEThe tragic death of Georgia nursing student Laken Riley has unfortunately become a rallying cry for the far right to highlight the problems at the border. The GOP is saying that if there had been stringent policies in place, the accused perpetrator would never have gotten in the country. Perhaps this is true, but studies have shown that immigrants are less likely to commit crimes that citizens. Following the GOP’s logic, however, one could also say that with the needed stringent policies in place for gun violence, we would not have the countless gun deaths our country has experienced. Let’s ask our GOP MoCs to use this line of thinking to support commonsense gun laws.
- SUPPORT THE AFFORDABLE CONNECTIVITY PROGRAM (ACP)Unfortunately, funding to continue the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP), an FCC benefit program that helps ensure that households can afford the broadband they need for work, school, healthcare and more, was not included in the funding bill Biden signed this weekend. Millions of people will find their broadband costs rise in May and will become unaffordable for most. There appears there is bipartisan support for this program and there is hope that Congress will include it in the second funding bill currently being negotiated. Let’s contact our MoCs and let them know that we want them to continue this program that helps to level the playing field in this age of information.
- REGISTER VOTERS WHO’LL VOTE FOR DEMOCRATSField Team 6 has perpetual opportunities for us to win in November by helping to register voters now—voters who will vote for Democrats. Let’s visit the Field Team 6 website and sign up to help.
- CREATE & SHARE CLIPS OF STATE OF THE UNION ADDRESSC-SPAN has broken down President Biden’s State of the Union address into points of interest—like “Reproductive Rights,” “Jan 6 Attack & Threats to Democracy,” “Manufacturing, Infrastructure & Jobs,” and more. C-SPAN also makes it possible for us to turn these into video clips using the red scissors icon. Let’s use these resources to share highlights of this inspiring speech.
- POSTCARD WITH GRANDMOTHERS FOR A BRIGHTER FUTUREThe grandmother of all political postcarding efforts—Grandmothers for a Brighter Future—is ramping up to start its postcard campaigns for 2024. The Grandmothers write to Democratic women voters in swing states, urging them to go to the polls. Let’s watch their inspirational video, and let’s sign up here so we don’t miss their forthcoming campaign. And let’s invite our friends to join us by using this link.
STATE-SPECIFIC ACTIONS
- ME – JOIN THE NATIONAL POPULAR VOTE INTERSTATE COMPACT
Last week, the state House of Representatives passed a bill(LD 1578/HP 1023) that would bring Maine into the interstate compact to elect the U.S. president by popular vote. This effort would give our state’s electoral votes to the popular vote winner once enough states agree to do so that we could guarantee the popular vote winner an Electoral College majority – effectively sidelining the Electoral College without a constitutional amendment. The legislation now heads to the state senate. Let’s contact our state senators and Governor Mills and let them know we support the NPVIC. We can also help by writing a letter to the editor own sharing our support – find tips and contact info for multiple media outlets here, here, here and here.
