- VICTIMS OF CRIME ACT (VOCA) NEEDS OUR HELPCurrent proposed budgets by the House, the Senate, and the President contain a devastating $700 million cut to Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) grants for FY24. While this cut will be spread nationwide, it could have devastating impacts on services to domestic violence survivors, sexual assault survivors, human trafficking survivors, and other crime victims. All states, such as Indiana, Iowa, Florida, Wisconsin, Maine, are realizing what a hardship this will cause them. Let’s contact our MoCs and tell them we do not want cuts to this vital program.
- MEDIA INTEGRITY MEANS MORE REAL REPORTINGHistorically, according to historians Heather Cox Richardson and Joanne Freeman on Instagram Live, the press/media has been used as a tool of accountability for our nation. Unfortunately, the advent of 24-hour news introduced the notion of talking heads that provide more commentary than news. Commentary is not reporting. In this election cycle it is more important than ever that our news sources take their jobs seriously and provide us with serious reporting. The media must start reporting the news of the tremendous differences in the presidential candidates and their programs and not as if they are equal candidates. The press has an obligation and opportunity to keep coverage focused on a logical and historical standard of the presidency. When we see commentary and opinions in what are supposed to be news stories in our media, let’s call them out.
- A LABOR SECRETARY FOR WORKING PEOPLE
Julie Su, a fierce fighter for workers as deputy Labor Secretary and head of the Labor Department in California who has won plaudits from unions for her advocacy during almost a year as interim head of the DoL, is set for another committee vote for her permanent confirmation this week. While her nomination has been stalled, she has negotiated a labor deal to avoid a strike by West Coast dockworkers, broadened employee training programs and cracked down on wage theft. She has proven she can do the job and do it well. Let’s reach out to our senators, especially if they’re moderate Democrats or on the HELP Committee, and tell them enough is enough – it’s time to confirm Julie Su.
- WHICH SIDE ARE YOU ON?By actual numbers derived from public information from 31 states in 2022, 38.78% of registered voters identified as Democrats, 29.42% identified as Republican, and 28.55% identified as independents (3.25% identified as members of other parties). According to a 2024 Gallup poll, 27% of those polled identified as Democrats, 25% as Republicans, and 45% as independents. With the Republican Party now allied with Putin’s Russian and openly embracing Nazis, it’s time for Americans to take an unwavering stand. If we are eligible to vote, and if our state allows it, let’s make sure that we are registered as Democrats, and if we are not, let’s change our political party affiliation to the Democratic Party. We can do so here.
- WE ARE NOT BURNED OUT, NYTThe New York Times has come into some criticism lately. First for age bashing Biden while looking past candidate Trump’s flaws, and more recently, reporting that the resistance is tired and burned out. We may be tired, but we are far from burned out. Perhaps they don’t see all the quiet, behind-the-scenes work we are doing. The folks at The Grassroots Connector took it upon themselves to write a letter to the editor of the NYT about this. Let’s take a page from them and do the same: editorial@nytimes.com . Short and sweet will also make the point.
