- ELECTION PROTECTIONS FROM AI DEEP FAKES Worries abound that the misinformation and disinformation around elections and candidates over the past several years is about to get even worse, thanks to generative artificial intelligence. One recent example: A robocall with a deep-fake of President Biden’s voice went out to NH voters telling them not to vote in the NH primary. Several bills have been filed in Congress to protect elections from artificial intelligence deceptions. Let’s tell our US Senators to co-sponsor S.2770, Protect Elections from Deceptive AI Act, and S.1596, REAL Political Advertisements Act, and our US Representative to co-sponsor H.R.4611, Candidate Voice Fraud Prohibition Act, and H.R.3044, REAL Political Advertisements Act.
- DEMS ABROAD: VOTE IN THE PRESIDENTIAL PRIMARY Just like all Democratic state parties, Democrats Abroad has a say in the Democratic presidential nomination process…. The Global Presidential Primary runs from March 5 to March 12, 2024. There are more than 100 voting centers around the world where Americans abroad can cast their ballots and help select the next Democratic presidential candidate. Please note that voters abroad may only vote for President in one Primary election – either in Democrats Abroad or our U.S. state. If we participate in the DA primary, we may vote in all other primary elections except for President. Find out more about the Democrats Abroad primary process here.
- SAVE THE GREAT SALT LAKE Several environmental organizations are suing the state of Utah for policies that have compromised the viability of the Great Salt Lake, which is rapidly shrinking, leading to threats of species extinction and toxic dust clouds. While state officials agree that something needs to be done, environmentalists are criticizing the state’s plan as inadequate, because it contains no binding measures to change policies that have led to the lake’s depletion. Let’s find out more about how we can support the efforts to save the lake, perhaps by donating to EarthJustice, or one of the other environmental agencies involved in the lawsuit. If we live in Utah, let’s also make sure to let our state officials know that we expect real action, not just empty words.
- PROTEST WAPO COVERAGE OF BIDEN ABORTION PROTECTIONS In its article “Biden expands abortion, contraception protections on Roe anniversary (gifted, no-paywall link), the Washington Post describes several Biden administration actions to protect reproductive health. Instead of putting Biden’s actions in the context of their importance to women and their families since the loss of the constitutional right to an abortion and the rise of abortion bans (example, example, example, example), the Post story fixates on the political horserace. Let’s tell the Post’s executive editor Sally Buzbee, sally.buzbee@washpost.com that abortion is too important an issue to be covered as merely a matter of the political horserace, and we want coverage of abortion policies to discuss their impact on people’s lives.
- FREE BOOK DOWNLOAD Rebecca Solnit has shared that the GENDER book by hunter rook is free to download for Kindle on Amazon through Friday. Boston-based, it includes “countless hours of research, more than 200 questionnaires, and dozens of one-on-one interviews with members of the communities depicted. The result represents an agreement of many diverse community voices and a huge step forward in the world of gender education.” This book is getting a lot of hateful reviews.
