Demographic Geotargeting: Your Shortcut to Finding Voters

Find likely voters with the the same tools that businesses use to find their customers.

Improve your odds of finding likely voters by factoring in those voters’ characteristics (demographics) and where they live (geo-targeting). It’s similar to the approach businesses use to decide where to open a store based on how close likely customers are close to that potential location.

This project describes how TheySeeBlue applied the approach to find the best areas to canvass young Indian-American women between the ages of 25-35 who do not have a party affiliation in Arizona’s 1st Congressional district. This project was done in about two using esri software that includes both data and mapping.

Geotargeting

Geotargeting is easy with Esri. Choose the area you’re interested in analyzing such as a state, congressional district, census bloc or an area you define. Next on top of that area you can add another data layer with the characteristics of people you are interested in. You can add up to five selection criteria at a time.

In our project we had the app find the number of Asian women between the ages of 25-35 in AZ-01 by census bloc. These information is shown on the map making it easier to decide the best areas to canvass.

Why demographic geo-targeting is important

More than 20 million Asian Americans currently reside in the United States. They are currently the fastest-growing racial group in the country, and the population is quickly gaining political power; it will constitute nearly 10 percent of eligible voters by 2036. Asian Americans continue to face barriers to the ballot box.

Language barriers, voter suppression tactics, and lack of quality engagement from political parties have produced a large, persistent racial disparity in voter turnout. In 2016, more than 64 percent of white Americans turned out to vote, compared with just 49 percent of eligible Asian Americans. This more than 10 percentage point turnout gap has existed for decades and shows no sign of closing without targeted intervention. – CAP

Mobilizing South Asian Voters

They See Blue® is a registered Section 527 organization. It works with all-volunteer chapters in each state that are independent grassroots organizations to mobilize voters in states with large South Asian populations (Indian, Pakistani, Bangladsehi, Afghan, Nepali, Sri Lankan and Indo-Fijian).
