The Government Shutdown Clock keeps on ticking

Under the Continuing Resolution (CR) passed a few weeks ago, funding for a large portion of the federal government runs out this week—at midnight on Friday, January 19. Funding for the remaining portions ends two weeks later, at midnight on February 2. If new appropriations or another CR is not passed by those deadlines, major portions of our government shut down.

In the past week, an important development has been reported: supposedly, Congressional leaders reached a deal on a CR that would fund the government, still in two stages, through March 1st and March 8th. Votes in the Senate were expected at the time of writing yesterday, with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer hoping that it will pass fully no later than Thursday.

However, the House “Freedom” Caucus is, as usual, trying to scuttle the deal. They’re calling it a “surrender” and are pressuring House Speaker Johnson to prevent its passage. They are doing this in their usual attempt to hold the country hostage in exchange for extreme MAGA legislation. We need to continue reminding our Members of Congress to stand strong against them.

Get ready to defeat Trump

n Monday, at Iowa’s Republican caucus, Trump won Iowa’s nomination for the Republican presidential ticket.

Surprised? You might’ve been expecting a different outcome if you’ve been following the media’s election coverage. Haley, DeSantis, Ramaswamy—every day, another headline about one of them or all three of them.

But Trump has been leading the Republican pack this whole time. He’s their guy and always has been.

The race between those three other Republican candidates is a horse race for second place, and it serves no purpose but distraction. Trump is the Republican nominee in Iowa, and it wasn’t close, just as the past year of polling hasn’t been close for some time either. Expect Trump to be the Republican candidate and plan accordingly.

Start watching for your ballot in your mailbox two weeks from now

This year is a presidential primary election year—which means the primary election starts in February. You’ll be voting in about three weeks.

Right now, you should check your voter registration to make sure your voter registration is active, your party affiliation is correct, and your address is current.

Then, start reading up on your choices so you’re ready when your ballot arrives in your mail in early February. Check out our Vote page, which you can easily share with friends and family members who are eager to vote in next month’s Democratic primary election.

Write postcards for Riverside & Orange County Board of Education races

We’ve seen over and over again the importance of Boards of Education in preserving—or destroying—the freedoms of students in their schools. You can help protect students’ freedoms by electing progressive BoE candidates—and you can do that right here in California over the next couple months.

Postcards for Democracy is supporting candidates in three Areas (like districts) for the Orange County Board of Education, as well as a candidate in Riverside County, in order to secure a progressive board majority. Let’s bring attention to their races, which are DECIDED on the March 5th primary election. Don’t let the word “primary” fool you—this race is one and done for the winners on March 5th.

In Riverside County, they are supporting Maliha Williamson.
In Orange County, they are supporting Bea Mendoza for BoE Area 1, Nancy Watkins for Area 3, and David Johnson for Area 4.

Winning these races means protecting the school boards from harmful, bigoted Christian-nationalist candidates. In turn this helps the school boards focus on the education and safety of students.
