- SPEAK OUT AGAINST TEXAS’S COMPLICITY IN THE DEATH OF A WOMAN AND TWO CHILDREN ON THE BORDEROn Friday night, a woman and two children drowned attempting to cross the Rio Grande. Federal Border Patrol agents were prevented from assisting them from the Texas National Guard, who had taken over the area, under the directive of Texas Governor Greg Abbott who has also made remarks about blatantly shooting migrants if he could do it without being charged with murder by the Biden administration. Let’s tell Governor Abbott that we are already holding him accountable for these and other deaths brought about by his abhorrent and inhumane policies. And let’s tell our MoCs that it’s time to speak out against these deaths and reframe the narrative to reinforce the humanity of those who are seeking a home in our country and label these deaths as abhorrent, racist, and inhumane.
- ACA/OBAMACARE ENROLLMENT PERIOD ENDS TODAYThe Affordable Care Act’s health insurance marketplace will hit a record high for sign-ups this year, topping last year’s record high. That’s according to an analysis from the Kaiser Family Foundation. Let’s remind our family and friends that open enrollment ends on today, January 16 and this is the link to use.
- CHILD TAX CREDIT REVIVEDBack in 2021, as the economy reeled from the pandemic, a one-year expansion of the child tax credit led to a historic 46 percent decline in the U.S. child poverty rate. Unfortunately, it was not continued and by 2022, the child poverty rate was higher than before. Unsuccessful attempts have been made to revive the Child Tax Credit, but only now is it gaining bipartisan support in Congress. The negotiations for the spending bill to forgo a possible government shutdown on January 19, include striking “a tax deal that credit (CTC).” Let’s tell our MoCs that we want them to support this effort to bring back the Child Tax Credit to help our youngest citizens and their families.
- LONG COVID HEARING ON THURSDAYOn Thursday, Jan 18th at 10amEST, the Senate committee for Health, Education, Labor & Pensions is holding a important for all-of-us hearing titled “Addressing #LongCOVID: Advancing Research and Improving Patient Care”. Since long COVID is now a real health concern, it is important that all members of the committee be at this hearing so they are informed to make policy decisions. Let’s encourage the committee members to attend telling them why we think it is important and let’s ask our MoCs to encourage them as well.
- SPREAD THE TRUTH ABOUT IMMIGRATION NUMBERSRepublicans love to talk about “Biden’s Border Crisis,” but according to this report released last October from the Cato Institute, the growth in our immigrant population over the past ten years is at its lowest since the 1960’s. Also, as the ratio of retirees to workers continues to increase, we need young immigrants in the work force. Let’s familiarize ourselves with these facts and make sure we spread them far and wide to counteract this false message. And let’s make sure to remind our MoCs as we continue to ask them NOT to cave into any “deal” that compromises the rights of individuals fleeing danger to seek asylum in exchange for more military aid.
STATE-SPECIFIC ACTIONS
- MA – SAY NO TO AN ARTICLE V CONSTITUTIONAL CONVENTION. DEADLINE TODAYThe pro-democracy organization Common Cause opposes the right-wing push to get 2/3 of the states to call for a Constitutional Convention under the Article V of the U.S. Constitution. Common Cause warns, “the group of people convening to rewrite our Constitution could be totally unelected and unaccountable…the delegates could write amendments that revoke any of our most cherished rights…there are also no rules preventing corporations from pouring money into the convention.” Republicans in the Massachusetts state legislature have introduced a bill calling for an Article V Constitutional Convention. It’s coming up for a committee hearing today. If we’re in Massachusetts, let’s submit written testimony stating our opposition to Resolution H.3541.
