ACTIONS

Thank farmworkers with (3) actions that make a difference.

First – V.C. residents! Check out your address on the pesticide map! Yikes! Then start on these three actions.
Action #1: Dec. 14. (See meeting notice below under “Events Happening Yoday) Comment at a meeting with the CA Dept. of Pesticide Regulation (DPR) in support of workers whose jobs puts them at ground zero of pesticide contact.

Action #2: Write a comment to the (DPR) by Jan. 12. Doesn’t matter if you live in Ventura County or not. You eat produce grown by CA farmworkers and you breathe the same air.

Action #3: Tell Congress that it’s way past time to give all these essential workers a path to citizenship.

Email to your legislators – Put children over corporate welfare and expand the Child Tax Credit in any December or January tax package.

Minimal email script for representatives/senators: I want Rep./Senator  [___] to prioritize reducing child poverty through a permanent expansion of the Child Tax Credit (CTC) in the year-end or early 2024 tax package. The expansion of the credit during the 2021 pandemic was a lifeline for families, with child poverty falling to record lows of 5.2%. In that one year (2021), thanks to this tax credit, there were 716,000 fewer Black children, 1.2 million fewer Hispanic children, and 820,000 fewer white children in poverty. Most low-income families spent the CTC on basic necessities like food, utilities, and rent or mortgage payments, as well as education expenses—and families need that help again now.

Now that the expansion has ended, in the largest, richest country on earth,16% of households with children reported sometimes or often not having enough to eat in the week before last Thanksgiving, up from 10.4% in the summer of 2021. There are currently 19 million children excluded from the full credit because of the income limits of the regular CTC. There should be literally 0% of our children going hungry and suffering the harsh side effects of food insecurity, including health, development and behavior issues!

Assuredly this program can be supported by NOT reinstating the bonus depreciation rule for corporations, which netted them $43 billion in tax savings and $1 trillion in pre-tax profits. Extended, this welfare-for-the-rich would cost this country $325 billion in revenue over the next decade. We need to invest in our kids, not in executive compensation, stock buybacks, and dividend payments.
