Dear Friends,
Let’s spread the word that public policies supporting racial equity help all people. It’s realistic to believe that the future can be better than the past and that we have an essential role in making it better.
For example, President Biden’s executive order on federal housing directs leaders to not only advance the inclusion of people of color in federal housing policies, but work to fix decades of racist policies in housing.
The executive order recognizes the historic, systemic problem of unfair discrimination. Federal, state, and local governments implemented discriminatory policies that contributed to segregated neighborhoods and prevented many people of color from building wealth. It then calls for action to end unfair discrimination, assist those who have experienced housing discrimination, and promote diverse and inclusive communities.
Activist groups increase their impact by working together with others to influence public policy in support of racial equality of opportunity. One of those groups is Indivisible Towson, Maryland, which has been working on police accountability at the county and state level for years, together with like-minded organizations, to pool and leverage the resources of each. Organizations such as ACLU Maryland, Jews United for Justice, BaltCo Progressive Dems, Allies for Democracy, NAACP Baltimore County, and Indivisible Towson have been working closely together to reduce racial gerrymandering of voting districts, among other issues.
Let’s encourage everyone to remember that protecting racial equity is no threat to the personal freedoms and equal rights of others in the U.S. Let’s explore how our work intersects and benefits those who are most impacted in our communities. We are stronger together.
