- SUPPORT REQUIRING THOUSANDS MORE GUN DEALERS TO RUN BACKGROUND CHECKS – DEADLINE 12/7
The ATF has proposed a new rule that would strengthen the definition of “engaging in the business as a dealer in firearms” so that between 24,500 and 328,000 sellers would have to register for a federal license—and thus be required to run background checks. This would be the broadest expansion of firearms background checks in decades, a giant step towards closing the online and gun show loopholes. The ATF is closing public comment on the proposed rule after THURSDAY, DECEMBER 7TH. Let’s make sure we make our voices heard in support of this crucial measure here. We can also use this tool from Everytown for Gun Safety. - POLITICAL VIOLENCE ERODING HEALTH OF US DEMOCRACY
Political violence in the US is on the upswing. We saw it on Jan. 6, we see in on the streets and everyday life, in school board meetings, and even in Congress. “These self-made radicals, mixing right-wing conspiracy theories and marginal beliefs, forgo logic and coherence in favor of personal grievances.” Trump’s recent words appear once again to be encouraging violence. A recent Johns Hopkins report determined that political violence is eroding the overall health of democracy in the United States. Even more troubling is that almost 25% of Americans think this kind of violence is warranted. Let’s ask our MoCs, federal and state, where they stand on this and ask that they publicly call out any kind of violence. Let’s let them know that unless they do, we will take it that they condone it, and we will not support nor vote for politicians who do not denounce violence.
- WRITE REGISTER-TO-VOTE LETTERS TO ARIZONA PARENTS OF TEENSThe Civics Center is seeking volunteers to write letters to parents of teens. The letters ask the parents to share a scannable QR code with their soon-to-be-eligible children so they can register to vote online. Letters should be mailed between Dec 30, 2023, and Jan 26, 2024. We can request as few as 10 letters and as many as 200. After we sign up, The Civics Center will email us instructions and a PDF of the letter, which we’ll customize with a handwritten message. We supply our own paper, envelopes, printing, and postage. Let’s get started by filling out this form.
- EXTEND AND EXPAND ADVERTISING BOYCOTT OF X (TWITTER) AFTER MUSK’S ANTI-SEMITIC TWEETApple, IBM, and Disney are a few of the companies that “paused” advertising on X (Twitter) after CEO Elon Musk amplified and supported a blatantly anti-Semitic tweet. Let’s thank these companies for taking this stand and ask them to continue their advertising boycott. We can find a more complete list here. Let’s also ask any other company with whom we do business that is still advertising on X to follow their lead.
